Two years ago, Orem was a definite underdog and Kearns was leading the league standings. stand-ings. Orem had them on the ropes with a 16-0 score until late in the fourth quarter when the Cougars hit the scoreboard with one TD, losing 16-6. That team went on to win the state championship over Provo in the last minute of the game. Last year the Cougars edged Orem, 13-6, in what was called the most controversial game of the year. The controversy mainly stemmed from a flag thrown after the gun had sounded ending the first half. Orem was ahead 6-0 and Kearns had been Revised Win For Behind superior blocking of the offensive linemen Lennon Ledbetter, J.D. Bussio, Kelly K i r w a n, Jim A s h t o n, Rogan Taylor, and Matt Shumway the Orem High Tigers upset a favored Granger Lancer team, 14-6, last Friday in Granger to remain in contention for state playoffs. Employing a new wedge blocking by the offensive line, the Tigers scored both touchdowns in that manner to spoil the Lancers' Homecoming in an extremely hard-fought n 1 1 i it WuffllEnSSL SPECIALS! This time the Cougars scored, then kicked the extra point to go ahead 7-6. This took the heart out of the Tigers who made a tremendous goal line stand only to have it nullified by a referee ref-eree who had made several mistakes mis-takes during the first half by calling Orem on off-sides when they were not. He later admitted that he was wrong, much to the dismay of the Orem coaches and fans. Therefore, the Tigers have a score to settle with the Cougars Coug-ars and hope to do it with a balanced attack of both running and passing. Coach Tom Molen reported that he'll have the team as fired up for this game as he had them for the Provo game. And the Tigers really need a victory to stay in contention for the title and a , chance to go Offense Yields Tiger Eleven game. Orem quarterback Gary C rowton really broke the game wide open in the second half on a fourth and one situation, running a 61-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown behind the offensive line's wedge. This was a clincher score that the Lancers just couldn't overcome against a tough Orem defense. This made it 14 times that Orem has defeated Granger. Last week Kearns edged Brighton, 23-20, in a tie-breaker in which each team is given four downs from (he 10-yard line to come up with a score or not. This game is under protest because Kearns had 13 men on the field when they kicked kick-ed the winning fieldgoal. Needless Need-less to say, Brighton protested but the call was not made. Kearns has lost two non-league non-league games --Skyline and East, considered two of the top teams in the state. The Cougars' attack will be spearheaded by halfback Neil Carsey, a fast runner who has piled up 200 yards in both the Provo and Brighton games. He runs a lot like Provo's Roger Gourley of last year. Doug Watch, an all-region lineman for the past two years, will lead the line going both ways. Coach Molen observed that if Orem can run against their line, it should mean a victory for the Tigers. to put the Tigers on the scoreboard. score-board. Val Hale kicked the extra point for both TD's. The first score was set up on an error-filled drive. The Tigers netted two yards in losses because of illegal procedure pro-cedure penalty in the first three downs. On fourth and 11, Granger roughed the Orem kicker to give the Tigers new life at midfield, rolling for three first downs in a row and a score. Orem's touted defense held Granger to a total of three yards on the ground in the first half and only 53 yards in the air. But the aerial yards put the Lancers on the scoreboard in the first quarter when quarterback quart-erback Marc A micone hit halfback half-back Mitch Gibson on a 32-yard 32-yard pass play for the TD. The PAT was wide and Granger trailed 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. We're really pieased with the victory and how well outline out-line play," observed Coach Tom Molen following the game. According to Clair R.
