People Peo-ple are throwing trash and food in the rivers and lakes of our community. com-munity. In order to live happy we no only need the necessities of lift but also we need to be free of disease and accidents because they shorten life and cripple people of life. People also waste land that we could use for people that live in hunger in all parts of the world. They also waste clothing that people could use in Africa, India, some in the United States and people of Europe and those that live behind the wall of West Germany. And I just hope that all of the people of the United States will keep our streets clean, our highways high-ways clean, our rivers and lakes clean and most of all that we won't waste land, food or clothing. cloth-ing. With drugs literally killing young people across the United States, it must have been a shock to millions of Americans whenthe Nixon Administration announced last week that it is seeking a liberalization lib-eralization of narcotics laws. ' Under the new proposals, marijuana mar-ijuana smokers and even heroin users would rarely be jailed. Perhaps the only bright note calls for tough penalties for professional pro-fessional drug pushers. The complex proposals would not legalize marijuana or any other drugs now outlawed. However, How-ever, some drugs would be reclassified. re-classified. The infamous marijuana mari-juana would be switched from the narcotics list to the same class as hallucinogenics, amphetamines, ampheta-mines, and barbituarates. The most drastic changes cover cov-er convictions for drug "possession, "pos-session, referred to in the Senate Sen-ate subcommittee hearings as "mere users" rather than 'drug traffickers." Present federal laws prescribe fines up to $20,000 and prison sentences from 2 to 10 years for the first conviction of marijuana or narcotics possessionalthough possessional-though the judge can suspend the sentence or grant probation. For subsequent conviction, however, the law imposes mandatory manda-tory prison sentences of 5 to 20 years. The Nixon Administration proposed pro-posed that the first conviction for marijuana or narcotics possession pos-session be a misdemeanor rather than a felony, with imprisonment up tp one year and a fine up to S 5,000. Subsequent convictions would count as felonies, with a jail term up to two years and a fine up to $10,000 but the judge could -suspend the sentence. Although the bill would ease penalties for selling narcotics and marijuana, it would impose stiff penalties for a pusher determined de-termined by the court to be a "professional criminal." What great news this must be to the narcotics user and the nonprofessional non-professional peddler! How many cases have you read "about that have convicted a professional pro-fessional pusher? To even have one arrested is very rare be-'cause be-'cause they are so clever to work Jthrough front men. Do you think a court would convict as a "professional criminal crim-inal a high school or college student who sells narcotics? Of course not! THIS entire proposal seems tc be an about face since the recent crackdown by the Nixon Administration Adminis-tration at the Mexican border. The "inconvenience" it caused people while border guards searched every car coming into the United States seemed to have repercussions all the way to Washington. But that efficacious effort by the U.S. did produce some of the best narcotics hauls in the nation's na-tion's history. Interestingly enough, the Mexican government perhaps put the most pressure on the Nixon Administration to halt the entire clampdown on checking for drugs. One doesn't have to be very smart to know that marijuana smoking is the open door toother more hard-core drugs. The recent re-cent tragedy of the daughter of Art Linkletter is a case in point. The 21-year-old Diane Link-letter Link-letter a former user of marijuana mari-juana and other drugs was on an LSD trip when she jumped from the sixth floor Hollywood apartment apart-ment a few weeks ago and was killed in the suicide. Art Linkletter, a staunch fighter fight-er for some time against drug usage, is now working on a television tele-vision special to encourage a clampdown on drug sellers and users. This same type of case hit this columnist's cousin in Eugene, Ore., last spring. A fine Mormon boy a junior in high school and the son of an LDS bishop became be-came involved in the "milder" hooker, marijuana. Then he went .to the more hard-core drugs. And finally LSD. The handsome 16-year-old boy parked his car near a freeway overpass, wobbled to the overpass, over-pass, and jumped to the cement freeway. This suicide, too, is certainly uncalled for. Families of drug victims across the nation must have their blood at near boiling point when announcements come from the government that drug laws will be eased. A Gallup Poll released last week showed that 84 out of 100 adults are overwhelmingly opposed op-posed to legalizing the use of marijuana. Interestingly enough, one-fourth one-fourth of those polled in the 21-29 21-29 age group favored such a proposal. Major reasons for opposition to legalizing marijuana were that it harms the mind and nervous system sys-tem and it leads to use of stronger strong-er drugs. Surely, there is enough evidence evi-dence in the government files and through the various state and city narcotics bureaus that it is time to reverse the trend in the drug traffic. It is not a time to liberalize the laws!
