Following is a excerpt from the three first place essays: It Is necessary for us to learn as much as we possibly can for we are the leaders of tomorrow. We must all prepare pre-pare for what the future may hold for us. In order to be prepared we must start planning plan-ning and learning now. Our leaders of today had to start preparing yesterday. They knew and wanted to carry on the democrat! way of govern ment. We believe and know that our government is one "of the people by the people and for the people." but it can only remain such as long as we accept our individual responsibilities. Deborah Can-Lincoln Can-Lincoln Junior High ' I am an American. I realize the responsibility that every HtiTPn has to reserve tne roirit of Americanism. Today T stand in the secuTity or knowing that competent lead ers are guiding my country courageously, and are striving to perpetuate freedom throughout the world. Tomorrow Tomor-row the torch will be placed in my hand. Whether the flame of Americanism will be come a brilliant blaze or be hidden and smothered will depend upon my actions. The soirit of Americanism musx exist and prosper in my mind and heart, that I might be its courageous defender; for true Americanism is my respon sibility. Paula Rasmussen .. It must be a devotion to our country's ideals and an observance obser-vance of our laws. It must also al-so include a respect for those who make these laws and govern gov-ern us, with tolerance for their, mistakes. With true Americanism Am-ericanism there must be a unity with our fellow citizen j of, the United States, abolishing abolish-ing prejudice against color, race, and religion.. Because I have travelled in the . world and seen the poverty and tve illiteracy of the people in many countries, I am convinced convin-ced that true Americanism must include a desire to help these people achieve a better way of Jife. It must be a desire de-sire for helpful coexistence with the Nations of the world, for with this coexistence will come a true, lasting peace in the world.
