"All the sons that plow the land shall oft be seen with book in hand. The poor shall now great wisdom know and water wind where corn doth grow. Great houses shall stand In far flung vale all covered o'er with snow and hail. In nineteen hundred twenty-six twenty-six build houses light of straw and sticks. For then shall mighty wars be planned. When pictures seem alive with movements free. When boats like fishes swim neath the sea, When men like birds shall scour the sky. Then half this world deep drenched in blood shall die; But those who live to see this through in fear and trembling trem-bling this will do. Flee to the mountains and the dens, to bog and forest and wild fens. For storms will rage and oceans roar, When Gabriel stands on sea J Personalized Christmas Cards See Oar Albania Now Hundreds of Beautiful Cards For You To Choose From STANDARD OFFICE SUPPLY CO. 40 West First North Provo Ph. This woman talked about a hemlphere that hardn't yei been discovered, among other things. I mention that because it's Columbus Day. Have been dipping into 'The Life and Voyages of Columbus" by Washington Irving and a very Interesting thing, too. Accord ing to Mr. Irving, on page 330 of my copy, some of the arch ers with Columbus strolled into in-to the forest and saw three men dressed in white robes with complexions as fair as Europeans. My father always maintained that this archer saw the Three Nephites. And that light Columbus saw before land was sighted a light like a candle, what could that have been? Too far from land to see a light. The night was stormy and no Ind ian would be out fishing under such circumstances. Anyhow, how could they have a light way out there? Took a book of matches, maybe? They just couldn't have a fire in a canoe, could they? The wonder Is that they had fire at all. Do you believe in curses? Do you remember King Tut-Ankh-Amen? This was way back in 1922--doesn't seem possible it's that long. Anyway, Baron West- bury, aged 46, died In July of this year. He and his father were members of the expedition expedit-ion that opened King Tut's tomb in Egypt. The walls were covered with hieroglyphics, One of them promised "Death on swift wings to him that toucheth the tomb of Pharraoh." The Baron died of a heart at tack, so it was said. His father, fath-er, at "the same age "also died His grandfather who kept the Tut relics and his moth er committed suicide. This, in one family. There have been numerous deaths among the personel making up the party of discovery. Makes one wonder. Bye, now. AC 5-9865 A Personal Word The New Testament tells a strange story of the tempta-ion tempta-ion of Jesus, in which it is said that he "was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil." The nature of the temptation was to draw Jesus into things which might have been considered good. The voice which spoke to him eva luated his possibilities for economic prosperity, political success, and even religious leadership. But a major con cession was to be the popular Izing of the Messianic eppear ance and the Christian movement. move-ment. People would be called to a "bandwagon" instead of to repentance. Withhout repen tance, without the commandments, command-ments, without the beatitudes, people would have been led into disaster. This struggle of Jesus against the forces of temptation tempta-tion was also a battle against what we commonly call the self. The opposition was that force inside of a man which causes him to want to make himself great, even at the expense ex-pense of others. The victory of Jesus over this temptation is a demonstration that real and lasting character is for the person who gives himself to something outside of himself. him-self. It is not self-gratification that produces 'happiness, but "self-giving" to the purpose for which ar person has dedi cated his life.
