How ever, Carbon will have a little tougher time in attaining sole Possession of first place, Span ish Fork and Orem would have o tie tomorrow and both lose their last game while Carbon 's winning their last two. Spanish Fork has played good ball all year. The Tigers however, lost their first three games iiney were preseason games and all with tough op oonents), then stunned their league opponents by outscor 'ng them 78 to 7 In their next three games. They started by wa-llonlng Springville, 39-0 -.pamsn hotk beat the same team last week, 33-14. Two of the backs that the Dons will have to contain for h e victory tomorrow are Srent Howe and Gary Thack- r. Howe, a big, elusive ath 'ete, started the year at quaTt rback but iniuries and a good ob of substituting by Paul T an gaffer have shifted him to he halfback position for the maioriv of the time. Thacker, generally recognized as the fastest man in the region a-3 a result of his consistent victories victor-ies in track, is one of the top scorers in the region. Snanish Fork also has some "ood runners. Among them are dean Clark, John Eans and Rex Woodhouse. Woodhouse scored two touchdowns and passed for another in the Dons' victory last week. They not only "omDie'ea several passes themselves (all to members of beir team), but they also in tercPDted two Lion passes. One of the interceptions was made by Brent Howe, who scored three of the four Tiger touchdowns touch-downs in his best effort this year. The other touchdown was made by Gary Thacker. Thacker scored his touchdown on a double reverse, a play that has worked tremendously for him this year. He also set up a Howe touchdown with a long run off a double reverse. The Lion' touchdown came when Kent Oborn took the kickoff starting the second half and handed It off. The Tieers couldn't quite, catch up with Mike Cowan and the Lions' momentarily were back in the game, losing 12-7. The touchdown was the first In league play against Orem, which is a very commendable record. The Lions blocked the first two PAT attemDts by Rod Jorgensen, but Rod booted the last two successfully to com plete the scoring. Outstanding players for Orem, were Smith, Allphin, Noel, and Palmer. Gagan and Marshall also made some fine gains for the Tigers. FR 3-4470 LIMITED ENGAGEMENT NOW SHOWING -" ' 1 JHibfSSEtlS MWM f Mil ETNLeHQYFREBKOJOT , !"",' C5IC? At 1:10-3:40-6:20.9:00 Dean Picks Cowboys Over Utah Gridders In our book, Wyoming is at least a 2 touchdown better ball club than the University of Utah. However, everyone tells us that Utah didn't play up to their full potential when they met Brigham Young University, Uni-versity, and that's the only game we personally have seen the Utes perform in. But we're going on a lot more than usi xne personal viewing of the two clubs. We have seen each team once That is definitely not enough to get a line on the club's true measure. But there are a lot of other comparisons that can be made . . . scores against comparable opponents . . . . statistical performances . . and a-ttitude and say - so of the home-town fans in each club. On the comparison, we rate Wyoming at least a 2 touchdown touch-down favorite tfn Saturday's ball game. However, the Wad-dies Wad-dies probably won't win by hat much if Utah is up for the Alum's big conclave. Actually, it ought to be a whale of a ball game if everyone every-one is in shape. And yet, nearly, near-ly, everyone tells us that Utah State is better yet. The Ute-Aesie Ute-Aesie tussle doesn't come un until November 18 and it's "onceivable at this time that thhe conference championship won't be determined until that time. Utah also has New Mex ico on the schedule. Wyoming as o"ly New Mexico remaining. remain-ing. Utah State still has BYU and Utah so the boys from Albuquerque Al-buquerque could have quite a bit to say in the final outcome out-come of this year's race. We still go along with Utah State as the eventual winners as we nicked them prior to the beginning of the 1961 sea son. The Aggies have what could be the finest first line In the entire nation. Their backs haven't lived up to last vear's records or potentialities, hut are still mighty good. John Ralston seems to have Instilled Instill-ed Into, them the desire to win, and our reason for picking pick-ing the Affgies as 1961 winners win-ners was that the loss to Utah last year should be enough of a springboard to launch this year's Logan team into the upper stratosphere of victroy You've got to admit though, the old Skyline, even in it's dying phase, has never had a more interesting or closer race than is being staged by this year's big 3. New Conference Begins . To Take Shape And as the Skyline dies, already the sprouts of the new Great Western league, as it's being called, are beginning to appear. The league has picked a commissioner . . Paul Brech-ler, Brech-ler, present Skyline boss, has been in session on formation of a new code which won't be released until ratified by the six schools presidents In a December meeting, and what is most concrete to the fans have begun to form next year's schedules for all but footbaU Footoball schedules are still ?bout 4 years off, since mosi clubs have their schedules completed through 1964. But Basketball, track and baseball as well as the minor sports, will all fill schedules in the 19R2-63 school year. The Interest has begun to build, too, as to what school" will be included in possible expansion plans. Present thinking is to hold the line rt the 6 schools until a code is developed, until schedules are made and possibly played for one year and until a firm foundation is established for future development of the conference, before considering consider-ing expansion. Oregon, Oregon Slate and Washington State have once aga-in been brought up as possible additional members. New Mexico State, Utah State and Colorado State are already al-ready making application, and the first two of that trio have a-lready been presented to the President's committee, but the move was tabled. Others who have expressed an interest Include San Jose State, West and North Texas State, and Idaho State is a possible entrant, though still a far cry from fulfilling the Parents of OHS Students Need A Shot In the Arm Let's hope the Orem High School PTA will get better participation this year from parents than -'they received during the last school year. We understand that in the annual election meeting of the OHS PTA held last year that only about 50 parents were In at tendance out of some 800 parents who have children attending OHS. We can't hard ly conceive how a parent could be so unconcerned about their children when this age of their children is an important or more so than any other age. Brent Howe, Orem's Powerful Halfback Looks, Great-- .halfback position, from his regular post of quarterDacK, the move of versatile Brent gives the Tigers greatei power In the backfield. In the Payson game he played In both positions. Brent a an excellent team man, a hard runner, who is extra hard for would-be tacklers to bring down. This week we salute Co-captaln Brent Howe. Brent is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Howe. Good for a Laugh A reporter from a big city newspaper stopped to visit a friend who ran a little country weekly. He asked his friend, "How can you keep up circulation in a town where everyone knows what everyone else is doing?" cuuor grinned. "They In spite of a shoulder in- iury Brent Howe, Orem Ti ger halfback proved to be a thorn in the. Payson Lions foot, in the football game between Orem and Payson. Brent car ried the ball 25 times for a net ?ain of 135 yards. Coach West-over West-over switched Howe to the requirements that were set up for the original 6 members. Our way of thinking runs along the track that the Northwest North-west ssehools Will, within a few years, be realigned with the Bib 5 in a renewal of the old Pacific Coast Conference, minus Idaho. We doubt very strongly that these clubs are strongly interested in-terested in an alliance with the Skyline and Border schools when the possibility of a reuniting re-uniting with the Big 5 exists. The one school no one has brought up seriously, but which,- we're sure, the new league would like to include is the Air Force Academy. The Falcons have tried their wings now for a few years on an independent in-dependent scale, and may be ready for league affiliation. They are: a natural, geographically geographi-cally as well as in every other way. We'll have to wait and see.
