Show Tigers Dominate Alpine Day Meet; lew Policy Now Rules Out OHS Competition In Future Alpine Days By Thaylc Anderson Orem Tiger Track team topped top-ped off a very successful season sea-son last Friday as they dominated dom-inated the Annual Alpine Day held at American Fork and copped most of the honors in the event. Principal Leman Bennett has announced that this year is the last year that Orem will participate in the Alpine meet, mainly because of the size of their school. The CUB BASEBALL LEAGUE TO START JUNE 1 The Cubs teams (age 10-12) in the Orem-Scera Boys Baseball Base-ball program has been divided into three leagues as follows: American League: National League State League All games will be played on the Pony diamond No. 1 with two games played each night beginning at 5.15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Games will be 7 Innings or 1 hour 45 mm. long, whichever comes sooner. Girl's Scera Softball League -- June 1 Any church group, ward M.LA., or other organization may enter a team In the Scera Recreation Girl's Softball League. Entries must be in by (May 26 in order to qualify. Teams may be entered by calling call-ing Leila Ogden AC5-3763. Play gets underway Monday June 1st. All Junior and Sen Sot League games will begin at 6:00 p.m. Forfeit time is 6:15 p.m. Primary League is to begin be-gin at 5:30 p.m. Forfeit time is 545 p.m. FRIENDSHIP CRUISE Milton (Mick) Bunnell and his sons Buddy Ross and Rex were among some of the lucky Oremites who participated In the Friendship Cruise last Friday, Fri-day, Saturday and Sunday. The cruise consisted of a 200 mile run from where the Green River joins the Colorado and then down the Colorado to Moab, Utah. Some 400 other boaters and "river rats" participated. Recognition should also be given to Gary Thacker, the running marvel of the juniors, who scored firsts in the 60 and 100 yard dashs, the medley med-ley relay, and in the broad jump. 1 00 Cowboys To Vie at Regional College Rodeo It's Western Week and Rodeo Time at Brigham Young University! The feature of six davs of western activities will be BU oeventjh annual Intercollegiate Intercolleg-iate rodeo - - May 22 at 8 p.m. and May 23 at 2 p.m. - -which will involve 15 teams from nine western states. Competition in the two-day rodeo is expected to be keen es the best performers in each event will be eligible to enter the Najiona 1 Intercollegiate Inter-collegiate Rodeo. More than 100 cowboys will be vying for the honors. The rodeo will be held at the Provo Fair Grounds, Grou-nds, 1200 South University Ave. Students will be admi-ted admi-ted on their activity cards. Morgan, admire a first place trophy won in the state hopscotch tournament held recently at Keams. Jolene is a student at Westmore school. She won her honors in the third grade division and then in a Provo tourney before going go-ing after the state title. The contestants were accompanied accom-panied on the trip by Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Ronald Lees and Mrs. Grant Johnson, VFW Auxiliary members. OHS ATHLETIC TEAMS SET ENVIABLE RECORD DURING PAST SCHOOL YEAR By Thayle Anderson The Orem Atheletic department depart-ment and its many followers can certainly chalk this year off as being a great success--in fact, one of the most sue-in sue-in the entire history of the high school. As the school year close they can look on the great showings and performances per-formances the teams have turned in against tough Class A competition. OHS sport fans can remember remem-ber how Coach Udell West-over's West-over's football team had a great season, winning all but two of their games, as they finished in second place be hind Provo, a team they had already beaten. They can remember re-member how the basketball team with Coach Berdene Jar-man Jar-man at the head roared past their opponents to finally gain a first place tie with Spanish Fork, whom they had beaten twice and also their fine effort in "the Cass A tournment, before they eventually even-tually dropped out. Kirby McMasters was second high scorer in the state in the Clas3 A teams and as a result made the selection for the all state basketball team. They can remember Coach Westover's crack wrestling team who were seldom de- L STATE i - - i feated and who placed second in the region. More recently Coach Jar-man's Jar-man's baseball team has showed show-ed progess, depite a period of rebuilding. Many fine pros pects loom for next year's team. The Track team, which real ly went to town winning nearly all their meets, placing fourth in the annual Show Invitational Tournament, and copping the crown in the region re-gion as well as dominating Alpine Day. Then the tennis team, who lost but one match in the entire season, romped to the Region Championship. Kirby McMaster and Mel Bennett, Ben-nett, a doubles team who won the doubles championship in the Snow College, BYU Invitational, In-vitational, and the crown in the State Class A tennis tournament tour-nament for the second straight year. Also, extensive atheletic activites were seen within the school as Physical Education Intructor Parlell Peterson organized or-ganized an intramural program pro-gram for extra curricular sport activity. The boys participated par-ticipated in tournaments in every activity and this proved to be a pleasing success. Kirby McMaster, an outstanding out-standing student at Orem High School in both sports and academic ac-ademic ability, walked away with a good share of the awards presented to students for the 1958-59 yrae. Kirby was awarded honors in Regional, Invitational and State doubles in tennis, State recognition in basketball and was the recipient of the Annual Park Basketball Award made to the outstanding basketball bas-ketball player in the graduating graduat-ing group. He was also the recipient of several scholastic awards, one of which placed him in the top two per cent of scholars in the nation. Harold Allphin, who was selected se-lected on the Region Five first team for his stellar play as a wingman on the Tiger team, was rated top football player during the 1958-59 season. During the assembly Flash Mikkelsen, who has been responsible re-sponsible for much of the tennis ten-nis success at Orem High the past two year, announced that in the future he will be devoting devot-ing more time to academic work. Jerry Rowley will be taking over coachin of the Tiger tennis enthusiasts next year. Bruce Watts, Rex Wright and Lee Bunnell were named the three top numeral winners of the year. Bruce and Rex let tered in football, basketball and track. Lee lettered In football basketball and baseball.
