Show OREM-GENEVA TIMES Thursday, February 17, 1955 UTAH STATE ROAD COMMISSION TO PAINT RIGHT SHOULDER GUIDE LINES IN 1955 CM Febiryeairy SpecosiDsS Another step to help reduce the number of accidents occuring on Utah highways will be undertaken under-taken this spring by the State Road Commission of Utah under the supervision of the Department of Traffic Engineering. Beginning with the 1955 paint season the State Road Commission Commis-sion plans to paint a 4 inch solid yellow line, 18 Inches in from the right edge of the pavement on highway widths of of 28 feet and over where the shoulder area is of similar surface.' 1 Nighttime driving habits indicate indi-cate that motorists in general will either swerve toward the path of an oncoming vehicle or maneuver their car to the right often going off the highway surface. sur-face. These Right Shoulder Guide Lines have proven very effective especially In nighttime driving and foggy weather. The reflector-ized reflector-ized yellow guide line will result in a sense of security and it is felt motorists will, therefore, drive closer to the outer edge of the pavement In December 1954, a 12 mile test line was applied on US-91 between be-tween Lagoon and Layton. As a result of this test and others conducted, con-ducted, approximately 1000 miles of this Right Soulder Guide Line will be applied during 1955. THROWS SUPPORT BEHIND "AQUALANTES" By Karl Banks The decision of Greater Utah Valley, Inc. to throw its mora) and financial support behind the newly formed "Aqualantes" or ganization was certainly a step in the right direction. In the diffi cult fight ahead to win CongreS' sional approval of the Upper Col orado Storage Project the best we have to offer in brains, and the most we can accumulate in fin ancial resources are necessary for ultimate success. There are only two primary factors which stand in the way of continued industrial and agricultural agricul-tural expansion of the Inter- mountain empire water and elec trical energy. The Upper Colorado Colo-rado River project will guarantee both of these. The project when completed will also reduce, materially mat-erially the erosion now going on Lat such alarming proportions in MIC uprci uiuiauu uiwm perts tell us that 130 million tons of soil from this area are deposited deposit-ed in Lake Mead each year. In other words the lake is filling up. and will become valueless if the rate of deposit is not checked. Engineers En-gineers estimate that the construction con-struction of the proposed series of dams' will lengthen the life' of Hoover Dam by at least 200 years. This one reason alone is sufficient economic reason to prove the necessity of the project. There are millions ot .air-minded .air-minded Americans living to the east and southeast of the Colorado Color-ado Basin. Most of them are neutral neu-tral In the controversy. It is our job, first, to inform them of what we are trying to do, and second, to convert them to the idea that the .project Is perfectly feasible and urgently needed. To do this will take money, but the 3,000,000 people living in the I Upper Colorado River Basin can furnish a lot of this if each- one does his part. A few dollars Invested In-vested in the future of this area will return many fold when the project is complete. - Greater Utah Valley, Inc. earnestly ear-nestly solicits the financial support sup-port of everyone who lives in Utah Ut-ah Valley. All of our Utah County Coun-ty newspapers are publishing the details of how these contributions may be made. Please do not delay; de-lay; your help Is urgently needed. on G.
