COLLINS CLEANERS FINEST CLEANING ANYWHEBE MS Be, State Vif Oram Food Sense Not Nonsense Clip For School Lunch Box From planning to packing; the school lunch box, mothers welcome a short cut to preparing; attractive lunches which will rate an A phis in nutrition. A short eat to meeting the child's requirements require-ments for this meal is to follow a basic menu , pattern. Whether the lunch is carried, eaten at home or at school it should provide one-third of the daily needs for calories, proteins, vita-" vita-" mini and minerals. If mother packs the food correctly, neither breakfast nor dinner need do double duty for a skimpy lunch. A simple basie menu pattern is the Type A lunch. Recommended by the National Research Council, it consists of two ounces of protein-rich protein-rich foods such as meat, eggs or fish; three-quarters three-quarters cup of vegetables or fruits or both; one or more portions of bread with two teaspoons tea-spoons of butter or margarine and a half pint of milk., , Here is the guide as it looks in the lunch box of the fve to nine-year old: Generous serving of meat loaf between two slices of enriched en-riched bread spread with butter or margarine, carrot and cabbage salad, hot cocoa in a vacuum vacu-um bottle, one large cookie and a banana. His teen age brother needs almost twice the number of calories daily. An A plus lunch for the 16-year old includes a serving of cheese between slices of enriched bread, bologna or est a bun, plus hot corn chowder in the lusa bottle and milk, purchased at school. A eatress of doughnuts and an apple top off the ranch for the on-the-go-adolescent A few caution signals are run up for moth-en. moth-en. Lunches are apt to be low in thiamine, a B vitamin. Sandwiches made with enriched bread filled with either peanut butter, liver sausage or baked beans will keep the thiamine score nigh. Vitamin C. or ascorbic acid, also may be low. But tucking in an orange or a fresh tomato will hurdle this trouble spot and keep mother at the head of the class. URGES GUN CONTROL LEGISLATION CIKLD YOUR FUTURE IN UTAH VALLEY The following Is an editorial by Hank Greenspun, which appeared in the October 17th issue of the Las Vegas Sun, following a snoot ing episode in a downtown Casino: Cas-ino: "A pretty young mother of a one year old son an d wife of a navy veteran is lying In the Southern Nevada' Memorial Hospital Hos-pital in a critical condition. She is paralyzed from bullet wounds inflicted by a 19 year old mental case. Another victim of the gun man was an unemployed bartender, bartend-er, Lester Thomas, who was present pres-ent at the scene of the shooting, because he was seeking employment employ-ment Lester Thomas Is dta. If Dale E. So liars, the gun wielding, mentally diseased youth had been required by law to obtain ob-tain a certificate of registration before being permitted to purchase purch-ase a gun, lovely Jean McColl would not be presentely fighting for her life and Lester Thomas, the innocent bystander, would be very much alive. But the laws of the state of Nevada do notxequire permits for the purchase of lethal weapons; so a 19-year-old half crazed In dividual walked into a hock shop and walked out with a deadly weapon which caused the death .of one man and the near-death of an attractive young girl. Where does the blame for this tragedy lie? If Sollars was rat ional and responsible for his actions, ac-tions, he would still be in the Air Force. Jean McColl was as In nocent of blame as any person could possibly be, and the unemployed unem-ployed bartender was not ven aware of any danger when he was struck down. But someone is at fault! . . . . , There is no real responsibility attached to the hock shop, which sold the gun, because the law em powers these establishments to engage in so stupid and vicious a practice. All the law requires of any seller Is that he ascertain whether the purchaser is over the age of 14 before handing over the lethal weapons. The law does not place any restrictions on mental cases or murderers." While not so spectacular as this Nevada episode, several deaths which have occurred during past hunting seasons in Utah could have been prevented if legal re strictions had been placed on the purchase and use of fire arms. As the law now stands, most anyone may legally purchase and carry highpowered weanons. if he has the money and an easily obtained nunung license to go with the same. - ' . Today, and rightly so, no one in Utah may operate an automobile automo-bile until he la older than 18 years, and has passed a rigorous driving test; but an individual! may use a shot gun or a high-powered high-powered rifle on the crowded hunting areas without any previous pre-vious instruction or test in the safe handling of the same. Greater Great-er Utah Valley, Inc, in the interest inter-est of the welfare and safety of all of our citizens, pleads for an. aroused public opinion which, will culminate in needed "gun control" legislation.
