Kids learn survival, problem-solving at Camp Invention By JARED WHITLEY Of the Record staff Commander Blake Matrisciano, 10, has a problem on his hands. His spaceship. The Exterminator, has crash landed Ion the hostile, alien Planet Zak. and he's got to keep his crew i: e i :i ui diivc iui a wcck uinu ncip tunics. "I'm just trying to keep the crew in shape, and make sure they survive," Matrisciano said. Matrisciano is a student at community education's Camp Invention, a nationwide summer camp curriculum for teaching kids problem-solving skills. The district is in the middle of its second sec-ond session of the campthis summer. sum-mer. "The purpose is to have a ton of fun, and in the process learn about science," said director Stephanie Schirman, also a Jeremy Ranch Elementary School special education teacher. During the Planet Zak portion, por-tion, the 10- to 12-year-olds focus on survival techniques. At the end of the week-long camp, they'll be rescued. Matrisciano made helmets and armor out of bags while The Exterminator's mechanic and navigator, (irady Tesh, 10, built goggles out of plastic from old toy boxes for his crewmates. He punched holes in the plastic and laced string through to secure the goggles. "And it got stuck in my hair." he said. To get in the spirit of invention, inven-tion, Tesh wrapped duct tape around his baseball cap. Matrisciano also duct taped his left shoe. . Jack Tuttlc, 10, finishes out The Exterminator crew as her doctor and shipmate. He says he enrolled in the camp because, "I like inventing stuff." He particularly particu-larly likes inventing electronic devices. When asked what he's invented, he responds, "Nothing yet, but I'm trying to." He wants to design video game systems when he grows up. Students had to invent shelters shel-ters to protect themselves during a storm. Camp teacher Traci Koltz simulates a rainstorm by flicking the lights on and off. Kids rush to hide underneath their makeshift shelters while camp counselor Jake Rogers douses them with a spray bottle. A Park City High" School sophomore, Rogers said, "The kids are just so brfght and so interactive. It's fun," he said. Koltz, who also teaches fifth-grade fifth-grade at Jeremy Ranch, taught the kids about makeshift fuel sources. She reminded them how at the end of "Back to the Future," the time machine's Mr. Fusion is powered by garbage. The kids replied. "Back to the what?" Koltz said. Kids "stuck" on Planet Zak learn that "clouds," represented by over-turned desks wrapped in garbage bags and- Christmas lights, can be a source of energy and learn about gauges like thermometers ther-mometers or barometers. Planet Zak isn't the only part of camp invention. In the module "SOS: Suddenly Shipwrecked." students are stuck on a desert island and must make do with the available resources. For example, they invented their own paintbrush with a bird's feather to draw cave art. Kids also learn about survival in the wilderness. "If you're on an island with your friends, you need to be prepared pre-pared if a rain storm comes," said Candice Wilson, 9. If it does, you should use make a shelter and go to the side of the beach where the storm's the weakest, she said. The 36 kids in Camp Invention are split into a younger and an older section. One of the activities for the 7- to 9-year-olds is "Spills and Chills," where they build cars or skateboards skate-boards to learn about Newtonian laws of motion. Brett Howard, 7, says he took the class "so I could help my dad build stuff." His father is building build-ing a game ro&m and underground under-ground theater at home. Howard has learned how to take things apart and about tools, which is important, "because I don't know every single tool," he said. semi-annual oriental rug ?
