SLC MorvFri: 9-5 Sat: 12-4 COUNTY WATCH Smoke in hotel prompts swift only the computer sustained damage, response Zwirn said Park City Fire District firefighters responded in full force to the Hampton Inn and Suites in the Snyderville Basin Monday afternoon after an employee at the hotel saw smoke. , "The first unit was able to evaluate the situation and determine that the smoke was very, very light," said Battalion Chief Steve Zwirn, adding that engines from several stations responded to the call. The smoke was coming from a computer that had malfunctioned in an office in the hotel, he said, adding that firefighters quickly identified the white electrical smoke. "If there's smoke thereTs fire," Zwirn said. "To a firefighter black smoke means a lot more than white smoke." "A trained professional can differentiate differ-entiate the type of fire by the color of smoke ... the average citizen can not do that." The Fire District received the call Monday at roughly 1215 p.m. and Public bearing scheduled to discuss mosquito abatement A public hearing Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Summit County Courthouse in Coalville will provide residents an opportunity to comment to the Summit County Commission about expanding the North Summit Mosquito Abatement District Though no cases of West Nile Virus have been found in Summit County, mosquitoes that carry the deadly disease have been located throughout the area. This year, with money provided by the state and Summit County Health Department, the Abatement District began spraying for mosquitoes coun-tywide. coun-tywide. A pesticide called Abate is used in most areas of the county, however, the Abatement District uses a gentler bacteria-based spray in sensitive areas like the Swaner Nature Preserve. Commissioner Bob Richer says Summit County is considering annex ing other areas in the county - including includ-ing South Summit and western Summit County municipalities - into the North Summit Mosquito Abatement District The District has only operated within the boundaries of the North Summit School District in the past . , A resolution passed July 21 by the County Commission "gives all taxpayers tax-payers and governmental entities notice that we intend to do this," Richer said. He adds that owners of second homes and commercial property in Summit County could expect to pay roughly $5.70 more in property tax per year for every $100,000 of taxable property value. "For all of us primary residents I think it will be about $3.15 for $100,000, maybe even a little bit lower," Richer said. "It's still kind of a moving target at this point" That amount could range between $270 and $3.15, he adds. Time capsule to be sealed for 50 years Soon a container filled with all sorts of Summit County mementos memen-tos will be "buried" in the County Courthouse in Coalville until the county's bicentennial anniversary in 2054. "We're not sure what's going in there. Everybody's kind of thinking think-ing of fun things," Summit County Commissioner Bob Richer said. "It'll be buried in the Courthouse with instructions not to open it until our bicentennial 50 years from now." Summit County Historian NaVee Vernon during August will collect material for the time capsule, cap-sule, Richer said, adding that a resolution adopted by the County Commission seeks "suitable and appropriate items." "Probably some pictures from our 150th year celebration," Richer said about this year's anniversary. "Let our children and grandchildren know a little bit more about us." The chip seal is complete and Utah Department of Transportation officials expect to get about three years out of the repairs. "We need to go back and do some more striping," strip-ing," said Brent Wilhite, a UDOT spokesman, about painting that still needs to be finished on the highway. "There won't be any lane closures." Tar and small rock chips are used to extend the life of the road, he said, adding that the project took about two weeks to complete.
