Apparently, quite a few did considering the turnout at The Canyons Resort each spring. It is once again time for the "'llie ISO Energy Drink Pond Skimming Contest and Reggae Fest." For those who are not familiar, with the annual event, pond skimming skim-ming in an event where skiing and snowboarding participants must dress up in costume, glide down a snowy hill and hope they have enough speed to skim a l(X)-foot pond without sinking. Thrill-seekers and spectators will gather near Red Pine Lodge which is across the bridge that takes trail-blazers trail-blazers to Tombstone, 'llie catch is that only 85 athletes can participate. Registration is day-of. one hour prior to the friendly competition. Not only is it fun to see who survives sur-vives the ride and who crashes and burns, the costumes are also an added element that makes for a good time. Matt Mravetz. an employee of All Seasons Adventures at The Canyons, is a veteran pond skimmer. For the past five years he has taken pride in constructing a costume, cos-tume, a project he spends weeks preparing. "I try to keep my theme to something current or something that's going to be kind of funny for the crowd or interactive." says Mravetz. "I try to see what's happening hap-pening in the news probably a month prior to the event. Actually building the costume probably started start-ed three weeks before the event." In the past he went for a Dukes of Hazard theme and once came as the daredevil Evel Knievel. A couple cou-ple friends are enlisted to help with the job after Mravetz bribes them with beer and pizza. Mravetz claims to participate because it is nothing more than pure entertainment and fun. There is no real skill involved. It is a situation where whatever happens hap-pens happens. As skiers and snowboarders brave the pond, a D.J. will fill the air with Reggae music until the live entertainment begins. The Reggae Cowboys will perform live at 'Flie Forum starting at 3 p.m. 'Hie group formed in 1SKJ3 in Toronto, Canada and has since become well-know for their sound, which earned them a No. 1 hit in France and the Caribbean with "Coce Dominique." Once the concert gets underway, awards will be presented for the pond skimming challenge. According to Katie Eldridge. director direc-tor of communications for 'Hie Canyons. "People can win prizes not just for pond skimming. 'Iliere is not just skill involved, but there is creativity cre-ativity as well." Therefore, participants can expect other awards including Best Costume aud Best Splash and Crash. And, as one of the resorts bigger events, participants can expect some stiff competition. But. as Eldridge notes, participants partici-pants are not the only ones that have a g(xd time. Crowds enjoy the various vari-ous elements as well. With wipe outs, snuxrth rides, silly costumes and hip music, the event appears hard to miss. "It's almost as fun to watch as it is to do. You understand that once you go to pond skimming." says Eldridge. "A lot of people in the crowd dress up as well just to get into lhe whole spirit.
