Show SatSunMonTue, March 27-30, 2004 The Park Record B-3 Lacrosse sets sights on the playoffs Park City club teams will start postseason quests with season-openers on Monday By BRETT LARSEN Of the Record staff The Park City High School lacrosse teams may only be club teams, but they have as much playoff potential as the best of their school-sanctioned counterparts. counter-parts. At least, that's the idea for all the boys and girls set to pick up their sticks on Monday as both Park City squads start their 2004 campaigns. "This is the best group of kids I've had so far." said boys' coach Jeff Munger. "We definitely have the potential to go deep in the playoffs." Munger's team returns a solid core of "extremely talented" veterans, vet-erans, including a ferocious bunch of attackers: Junior captain cap-tain Eric Moore, junior Derek Staneck and senior Seth Symonds. "It's definitely ,the strongest group of attackers that I've had," Munger said. The girls won't be short on offensive firepower either. Allstate All-state center Hadley Kemp is back for her senior year, and girls' coach Karyn Sheaffer has high hopes for her and for attackers Lizzie Leader, Jamie Babcock and Courtney Aho. "She's great. She's awesome. She's probably going to score a lot of goals for us." Sheaffer said of Kemp. Since several members of the girls' squad are also members of other Park City teams, Sheaffer said the level of speed and athleticism ath-leticism among her girls is high. "We have a lot of girls who arc-really arc-really fast. I think that's our strength," she said, but added, "Inexperience is the weakness." Unlike the boy's team, which" has been around for 10 years, the girl's team is only in its second season. Even its best players have a maximum of one year's experience. experi-ence. Still, Sheaffer is confident that her team can improve on its rough inaugural season - in 2003, the girls won only two games -and make it into the playoffs. "I think we can do pretty well," she said. To qualify for the postseason, the girls will have to finish in the top eight of 17 teams. "We're kind of shooting for that." The girls start off by playing Jordan, another second-year team, on Monday, followed by a home game against the Oakley School on Wednesday. "We would really like to win both of those games," Sheaffer said. "We'd like to start the season sea-son with a win." The boys, meanwhile, will travel a touh road to the playoffs. play-offs. The team's schedule includes dates with 'Alta. the 2002 state champion, Jordan, the state runner-up in 2003 and powerhouse programs Judge and Juan Diego. "The level of lacrosse play in the state has just improved dramatically," dra-matically," Munger said. "Every game is huge for us this season, I think." Besides facing stiff competition, competi-tion, the boys will also have to overcome extra hostile crowds when playing on the road. "Wherever we go, they just don't like Park City," Munger said of opponents and their fans. "They want us to get our butts kicked."
