2) Emocionales. Estas pueden ' incluir falta de interes, depresion, poco senti-do senti-do comun o juicio, irritabilidad e irrespons-abilidad. irrespons-abilidad. 3) Familiares. Are any of our kids' friends involved in drugs? Are any of your children or members of your family doing drugs? What is a drug? A drug is a chemical that produces a Iherapeutic or non-therapeutic effect in the body. The foods that we eat are not drugs. But alcohol is a drug, not a food. Nicotine is a chemical that is found in tobacco tobac-co and is also a drug. The group that I want to talk about is 'the illegal drugs" which include the chemicals that have only a toxic action. Teenagers get involved with legal or illegal ille-gal drugs in different ways. Usually they start experimenting, they want to know for themselves them-selves what it is all about. Many don't have the intention to become heavy or regular users, but slowly they get trapped in the slavery slav-ery of substance abuse. This doesn't apply only to teenagers but also many adults who are introduced to drugs and think that they are indestructible. Some have tried, use it once in awhile and can stop it." Other users develop dependency very quickly and start trying stronger and more dangerous drugs. Why are our young people so attracted to drugs? There are many reasons, but the main ones are: curiosity, because it feels good, to fit in with their peers, to feel grown up, to escape from some challenges in their lives, etc. The average age of the first-time marijua-. na user is 14 years old and the alcohol user, starts before age 12. The use of drugs is associated asso-ciated with many negative consequences. t The first one is the risk of a drug user dying , because of an overdose. Besides the possibil-! ity of losing your life, you can lose your free-, dom because these drugs are illegal. There ( are very serious consequences in store for i those who use illegal drugs or distribute and , market drugs for profit. Second is failure in school -- grades usually decline and assign- ments never are done and turned in. Third is the lack of good judgment that can put the ' drug user at risk of accidents, violence, , unplanned and unsafe sex and suicide. , Looking at this list the only thought that t comes to my mind is. "I hope that those who . have never tried drugs develop will power to , say no! And those that are trapped in the claws of this self-destructive practice may have the desire, strength and support to get out of it." Who is at risk? 1) All those who have a family history of substance abuse. If a child's parents do drugs, who is going to tell him "Don't do it?" Even though he or she may have good teachers and counselors that are telling the truth about drug abuse, if they have the example at home, it's going to be hard to keep that child from doing drugs. 2) Those who are depressed. 3) Those who have , low self-esteem and who feci like they don't fit in or are out of the mainstream. What are some warning signs? We have 1) Physical signs. They are usually tired with many health complaints, a lasting cough and red glazed eyes. 2) Emotional signs. These ', may include lack of interest, depression, ; poor judgment, irritability and irrcsponsibili- ; ty. 3) Family. They start arguments, break ; rules and try to be by themselves. 4) School. Discipline problems, absences, negative attitude, atti-tude, decreased interest and a drop in grades, ; etc. 5) Social problems. Problems with the ; law, a change in style of dress and music, a change of friends. Some of these signs may ! be related to other problems. One of the first ; steps is to go and see a doctor; usually this is ; followed by a visit to a psychiatrist or mental '. health professional. , If you know someone that you want to ' help in stopping substance abuse, you can I contact "Project Reality" at (801) 364-8080. j 'Hie address is 150 East 700 South in Salt Lake City.
