Show PCHS alumnus Seeks help Joe Martinelli benefit to pay for medical costs from accident jy JANA MCQUAY & the Record staff Last month, Park City High School alumnus Joe Martinelli was involved in a skateboarding ' accident, requiring . brain and wrist surgery. , .". ' ' Slowly healing from the fall, 25-year-old Martinelli still hasnt regained complete vision in his left eye. In art effort to help pay for medical costs, an account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank to give the community an opportunity oppor-tunity to help him out. A fundraiser also will be hosted host-ed at Suede, a private club . at : Kimball Plaza, on 1iesday, Aug. 26. The event will begin at 7 p.m. Two bands will perform for the cause, including local bands, Greg & Scott and Sautied Mushrooms. A silent auction and prize drawings draw-ings also will be held. Martinelli has lived in the Park City area since 1989 and has been employed by Wahso restaurant for the last two years. More than anything, Martinelli hopes to continue with plans to attend Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., to complete a business degree. " I only have about a year and a half left," he said. . He has already registered for fall semester and has the support of his mother's family on the East Coast if he can make it back there. ' Right now, his future is on hold due to the financial burden of paying off medical expenses associated asso-ciated with the accident. . Martinelli was at a friend's bouse in Deer Mountain when, he flew off a skateboard at the base of a sloped road. "We were all longboarding down this hill," said Martinelli. "At the bottom, a gravel truck left bits of gravel on the road. Usually you skid out and fall. With me, I hit the rocks and instead of the board skidding out from under me, it stopped short and made me launch. I pretty much did a 'Superman' through the air.'" At first, he thought a few stitches and a look at his wrist and " -l"f f 'f, U ' Por.the week of August 21,, 2005 : ARIES - There are weeks when work i r . i r. i a! ,- tan ix iuii. inis is une ui inose times when you feel like your : job environment is practically a whirlwind of social activity. His friend. Olympic silver medalist Joe Pack, drove him to the University of Utah hospital. They called Martinelli's mother, moth-er, Bernadette, conveying to her what had happened and that it appeared to be "no big deal," according to Martinelli. Not realizing it was an emergency, emer-gency, he sat for two hours in a waiting room until a neurosurgeon neurosur-geon walked by and did a double take. "He saw me and yelled to a nurse. He got a couple of colleagues col-leagues and started touching my head," said Martinelli. "He said, 'You need to sign this or you're going to die. You need brain sur-gery.'" sur-gery.'" Soon after, Martinelli's mother received a call from a nurse saying say-ing that her son's skull had been crushed and a blood clot had formed on his brain, adding that he would need to go in for brain surgery in an hour. "That's when I kind of freaked out," Bernadette said. At some point during the confusion, con-fusion, his mother figured out that 'their IHC insurance' policy might not offer 8020 split coverage cover-age at the University of Utah. But doctors weren't about to release Martinelli after he had undergone major surgery, he said. Along with fracturing his skull, he also severely bruised his left eye, broke his right wrist and scraped his leg. "He cant see out of his left eye LEO . "I was in the hospital for four days," Martinelli said. "I should have stayed longer but I didn't because of the insurance. I probably proba-bly went home a week earlier than I should have." Though he'll likely be able to begin using his wrist in about a month or two, it may take five months to regain sight in his left eye. "I severely bruised my optic nerve," he said. "They told me six months. They don't know whether I'll need an operation yet. Your eyes are "really finicky and take a long time to recover." Because Martinelli did not go to an IHC-approved hospital and because he did not initially check in as an emergency patient, IHC, thus far, has determined that he is responsible for 50 percent of the medical costs, according Martinelli and his mother. "I got the first bill from the hospital, and that was $23,000," said Martinelli, adding that he has yet to receive bills from doctors and the anesthesiologist. Since Martinelli's father passed away from cancer several years ago, his mother. Bernadette, has reared her children chil-dren oh her own.
