TMMS students journey to Costa Rica: This summer, six students and two teachers traveled to the rain forest By JENNIFER R. MERBACK Of the Record staff Hiking through the rain forest, ' swimming beneath a waterfall, and cleaning identification tags for- trees in a world-famous arboretum is not your typical destination des-tination for a summer vacation, but for six Treasure Mountain Middle School students', it was. This year's trip to the rain forest for-est in Costa Rica was the second annual trek for TMMS students and science teachers. ' For as long as she can remember remem-ber TMMS environmental science teacher, Michelle Breinholt has served as an ecologyenvironmental ecologyenvironmen-tal mentor to young students. Whether helping students with science fair booths or serving as a club advisor, Breinholt has fulfilled ful-filled her desire tp teach kids about the important role they play in taking care of the environment. At the beginning of each school year, Breinholt asks students stu-dents to pick a cause they want to support, both locally and globally. Many times, the kids choose to help the raiii forest by raising money to buy precious acreage. But what if students could visit the rain forest and see the impact their support has? Breinholt came up with the idea for the Costa Rica trip from this desire to show her students the rain forest rather than simply send money. The - goal is two-fold. Throughout the year, students raise money to help buy science supplies such as, magnifying scopes and rain gauges for Costa Rican students. Then at the end of the year, TMMS students travel to Costa Rica to hand-deliver the supplies to the schools in need. This year, TMMS students Brittany Walters, . Brooke Miller,-Kensy Miller,-Kensy Graunke, Kelsey Raymond and Amanda Johanson joined Breinholt and fellow TMMS eighth-grade science teacher, Jackie Walker. . . When one student had to drop : out of the trip, Breinholt asked her 67-year-old mothei1. Bonnie Burge to come along. Burge had the time of her life : traveling to a country she might never have . otherwise, said Breinholt. Once the TMMS group arrived in Costa Rica in June, they discovered discov-ered the local teachers were on strike, so their plan to visit three schools was reduced to two. Instead, the students were given a special assignment at La Selva Biological Research Station in the Sarapiqui Region. La Selva is a world-famous premier pre-mier station of rain forest study that serves as a campus of sorts, for renowned scientists. Many of the identification tags on the trees at the La Selva arboretum were in need of a good cleaning. These tags not only identify the types of trees to visitors of the arboretum, but they also serve as global position markers" that measure the growth of each tree. TMMS students worked hard cleaning the tags for the library of trees. The kids were also able to hike and horseback ride, swim in waterfalls and hot springs, and observe the many types of wildlife that call the rain forest home. To keep parents informed of what's going on during the trip, Breinholt and Walker create a special web site before leaving for Costa Rica. Every few days, when they can access a computer, Breinholt and Walker post anecdotes on the web site for parents to see. Former TMMS student Amanda Johanson, enjoyed the trip immensely. She even created a special scrapbook of her adventures. adven-tures. "Ihad the most fun horseback horse-back riding through the rain forest for-est to this beautiful waterfall where we swam," says Johanson. it 0 C PS -41 5; 1 1 I --A ft , t-fl v Above: TMMS students rest after a hard day's work in the rain forest.
