Hut for the moment, everyone involved seemed content with the outcome. Hy mid-afternoon, the children were happily making bracelets with bulterliy-shaped beads. It was an activity tiertsch found highly appropriate since actual butterflies had been fluttering around all morning. "Butterflies are a symbol of transformation," said Gertsch, obviously enjoying every bit of the experience. iummit schools start early Some schedule changes in store for North and South Summit school districts By RENEE LOWRY Of thf RiCoril ililjf It still feels like summer vacation. vaca-tion. But in less than four weeks it's back to the books for North and South Summit school kids. And with any new school year come the inevitable changes that will lake some getting used to. lor South Summit School District, the starling times for each of their three schools will change slightly. I he details of the time change are not yet final, but school dis-tiict dis-tiict superintendent Mark Littleford can give a rough outline. out-line. "The high school and middle school will start approximately one hall hour later. 1 he elementary elemen-tary school will start approximately approxi-mately 15 minutes earlier." Elementary school will begin at 8:10 a.m. With regard to how residents have responded to the idea of these changes, Littleford states that "some are happy and some aren't." But Littleford emphasizes that their decisions are far from random. ran-dom. Rather, they are for "the safety and welfare of the students." stu-dents." By way of reasoning, Littleford explains that "some studies suggest that the biology of students in secondary schools is more conducive to starting later." The second reason relates to the school bus system. Littleford explains that by reducing the number of incidences where older grades ride with younger grades, it will create a safer, more comfortable environment. It is also quite economical. By staggering the start times of the three schools, buses will be able to tlrop off elementary school children, then make a second run for the older kids. This will eliminate elim-inate the need for more school buses. Reasonable or not. Littleford acknowledges that some parents are far from pleased. Slaves Littleford, "Elementary schol children will get home earlier. Some parents are concerned that no one w ill be at home when thty arrive." The true test of the new system sys-tem will come when school starts on August 26. Like South Summit. North Summit School District will make a few changes to their own bus schedule. i In past years, there has been some flexibility with regard Jo school bus slops. In fact, therye has been flexibility to the point of disruption. According to superintendent Steve Carlsen, school secretaries have been increasingly inundated with phone calls from parents requesting special stops for their children. Not only has this system creaj-ed creaj-ed confusion for the drivers, it has confused the children as well. Carlsen explains that for the safety of the children, "each chiJJ is going to be picked up in ope place and dropped off at one place." The idea is to eliminate the uncertainty and create a stabilized sta-bilized schedule for everyone involved. "So far we've had very little negative feedback," states Carlsen. "And 1 don't think we.'jl hear a lot." .; Again, we'll know more when North Summit Schools open up on Friday. August 23. "Right at Home." Designs, Inc.
