Keeping them busy Summer vacation has officially started and with that many things change in our lives, especially our children's schedules and activities. Some of the main concerns that parents par-ents have are, what can I do to keep my children happy, busy and involved in activities, not only those that are fun but also those that will be of benefit to them? There are many camps and clubs that offer great planned experiences for children chil-dren and teenagers. I want to tell you about two in particular that will be positive experiences for your children. chil-dren. One is related to reading. I think that one of the best things that we can promote and advertise to our children is the joy of reading. This activity that has been, for many, totally replaced by TV, Nintendo games, or computer games, has so many benefits. Anybody that enjoys reading books: 1) Has an advantage in studying, because most of our studies involve reading books, reports, etc. 2 Develops good spelling, which is related directly to our memory - the more we read, the more we will remember how to spell right. 3) Becomes a better writer. By reading many books and lots of information, it becomes easier to write about a particular subject or theme when called upon to do so. 4) Develops a good imagination and creativity. Every time we read a book, we open tne curtains of our imagination and put on stage the story according to our creativity. I like to think that reading a book is like making your own movie in your mind. 5) Has a better chance to succeed suc-ceed in life. We all want that for our children. 1 encourage you to read and listen to your children read. Do it in Spanish and also in English. Take advantage of the reading programs pro-grams that we have in our community communi-ty this summer, especially the one that we'll have in McPolin School, from June 18 through Aug. 8, every Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. This program is FREE and is geared for children five to 12 years old. The program will offer the opportunity to develop a little lit-tle more a love for reading, mixing it with fun and prizes. The children don't have to be pre-registered; they can come directly to the school library, and enjoy this time as little or as much as they want or can. The other activity that is so good for everybody is sports. Participating in sports not only benefits ben-efits the body with exercise, but also expands the social life of a child and their self-esteem. It teaches them to be part of a team, the responsibilities responsibili-ties of their position and what is expected of them. It teaches them to win and to lose, which prepares them for life where sometimes we win and other times we let others have the sweet taste of victory. It is important to involve children in fl ili(tMto Tib Hfffif t 13 ,4 ., Park City 1776 Park Ave., St. 101 649-3389 1 www.mountainwest-bank.com With II branches, we also serve the following communities: Wood River Valley Kootenai County Treasure VaSSey Brigham City i - WMtv. oW Mountain West Bank MEMBER FDIC ti physical activities, so why not take up a sport this summer? How about baseball? We have in town two special spe-cial people, Rob Marasco and Jim Scherider, who have dedicated their energy and time to give Spanish-speaking Spanish-speaking children the chance to play ball. We know there are many parents par-ents who would love to enroll their sons and daughters in a sport but they don't have the financial means to do so. To participate on this special team put together by Rob and Jim, a child has to be a Latin boy between seven and 12 years old. You can send your boy to play, starting start-ing this Tuesday. June 18, and every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer, from 1 1 a.m. to I p.m. You don't have to worry about any equipment or uniform. Just send the kids to play ball on the field between McPolin Elementary and Park City High School. If you have a question, please call me at (435) 513-0900 or at Silviafo'bbbsu.org .
