Show SatSunMonTue, June 15-18, 2002 The Park Record B-3 r THE NEXT GENERATION by Jessica Trobaugh Keeping the bats swinging BBUM m p ill III ,1 w... w Editor's note: Every Wednesday and Sqjurday, The Park Record will run " The Next Generation " a bi-weekly roundup of Park City and Snyderville Basin youth sports. To have a Little League or Softball team included in the roundup, send an email to Jessica at youth-sport youth-sport sparkrecord.com. Minors ARIZONA DIAMOND BACKS: The Diamond Backs are fine-tuning some positions. Now three-quarters the way through the season, the Diamond Backs have advanced all of their skills. "'The more they swing, the more they'll hit," says head coach Cindy Akana, who has seen the players give their all every game and practice. prac-tice. Now the Diamond Backs are working hard to make every play count. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS: For the last two games, the Cardinals have had amazing comebacks. Entering the final inning with six or eight point deficits, the Cardinals managed to keep the bats swinging and bases loaded. "Part of the game is luck," says assistant coach Les Ashwood, "and the other part is hard work." Winning three of their first five games, the Cardinals' confidence continues to rise. Pee Wee OAKLAND ATHLETICS: After six machine-pitched strikes, players of the Pee Wee league may use the tee to start a play, but not the Athletics. Attempting to get three outs per inning and swinging at every pitch keeps the players working as a team, and looking forward to future games. Coach Chris Evans says the kids are "really catching on quick" and continuously enhancing their skill level. BOSTON RED SOX: The Red Sox are kicking up their game with great fun and hard hits. Further in their understanding of basics, the Red Sox are becoming better and better ball players. "They're terrific." terrif-ic." said coach Greg Pack. "Everyone is having a good time." SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS: Hold the Rice-A-Roni, the Giants are the new San Francisco treat. Last Saturday, the only female player of the team, Madison Davis, tagged a runner headed to first, then threw to second. Three players hit non-error triples Turner Bronstein, Andrew Method and Gabriel Cohen. The following game, Cohen also snagged a beautiful play from short stop, while Method hit an inside-the-park home run, and David Vison was recognized as most improved batter. Trevor Roberts made a remarkable play on third base, and Zack Mimlitz earned the most improved player for baserunning. Tee Ball ARIZONA DIAMOND BACKS: During their last game, the Diamond Backs blasted three home runs in one inning! Well, maybe not, but it was close. "We are having a great time; they are all having fun," comments Coach Charlie Slusher, a second-year coach for the league. The Diamond Backs are now tagging runners and cranking out the hits. Perhaps soon they will see those home runs. TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS: All the Rays are looking to play at the pitcher's mound during their games. Though pitching is not involved in Tee Ball, the mound offers excitement for players who like action. Now the team is aware of important fundamentals such as getting the ball immediately and throwing it to first base. And some players have moved from intimidation intimida-tion to domination when approaching approach-ing the plate. COLORADO ROCKIES: These team members have secrets on how they play their game so well. Making faces at the baseball just before hitting it and gripping the bat good and tight helps all the ball players do their best. "Some of these kids really have some natural talent," said coach Kendall Simmons. Last game, the Rockies' seven outs proved their improvement improve-ment in batting, and next game they are hoping to do the same. Check us out online.. at CD NEW mi? Buy The Best!
