With the development of the vveh we have seen inaor shifts in consumer habits. People can do anything froni buy airline tickets to iirocery shop online and it has completely changed the way the general public makes p u r c n a s e decisions. No longer do people need long lead nines to plan a vacaiion or book airfare. In a mailer ol moments the consumer can research a vacation destination. des-tination. Ilnd lodging and book the llight without even picking up the phone Yci many people si ill seek lo measure destination visitor interest by phone call volume. While this can slill be a minor indication of destination interest. M is by no means the major medium through which people are using to make vacation plans. I he Chamber Bureau is able to track the trends coinciding with phone and web inquiries. While September 1 1 and the Olympics may have skewed travel trav-el numbers, it is still possible lo track the trends consumers con-sumers are displaying overall. While phone inquiries volume has dropped since the Internet revolution, web site visiis have increased and continue to increase daily. You can see by the graph below that even in the last year visiis to vwvw parkcityinfo have increased steadily and coiisisienilv. Not only do web visits track interest in 200100 J 150000 100000 I 50000 0 Park City, once the visitor is has entered the site it is easy to track how long the visitor staved and what sections sec-tions of the sile were most interesting, lo them, l or instance if the visitor was interesting in lodging tliey would visit the lodging section or if they were interested interest-ed in activities they would spend time in the activities section. All of this information is helpful not only in determining visitor interest in the area but it also helps to illustrate what visitors plan lo do and where they plan to stay. 1 his information allows the Chamber Bureau to create very targeted target-ed marketing and PR campaigns. Another trend that is a reflection of the Internet revolution revo-lution is the lead-time lead-time travelers are using to plan vacations. vaca-tions. No longer does a family start planniim a vaca- - Visits 01TJ2 -Visits 0001 y , JJ Month tion months in advance, calling lodging properties and airlines to compare prices. The family hops online and uses one of the many vacation search engines to quickly find the best package prices. Because of the short lead-time, projecting things such as visitor nights becomes much more difficult. While things may look dismal as businesses look at low bookings book-ings for next year, what they need to realize is that many of today's travelers will not book until a week or two before they leave. Phone volume and web visits will continue to be logged by the Chamber Bureau for future analysis of travel industry trends The firsthand knowledge and understanding, of these trends allow us to proaetively create and execute marketing and PR campaigns with confidence we are reaching our markets w ith prime tim-iniz tim-iniz and medium in mind. l ....... lr -zTr VI - f 1 1 J t.
