The Park City students stayed with the Beijing students in November and are now reciprocating as hosts. The exchange program was organized in 1993 by the U.SVChina People's Friendship Association, Utah Chapter, headed by former for-mer Park City Board of Education Member Val Chin, and the Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. It was the team's first ever state championship. champi-onship. Forensics students compete in several sev-eral individual and team speech and debate categories. Park City edged out Pineview High School for the top spot. The schools' point totals were tied at the conclusion of the competition, but Park City placed higher in the individual events, enough for the team to take first place, according to PCHS English teacher and forensics coach Genevieve Budden. Snow Canyon, Ogden, and Emery high schools, and Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School rounded out the top five. Among the 17 Park City team members, Green placed second in the Lincoln-Douglas Lincoln-Douglas Debate category. Matt Lyon was third in Foreign Extemporaneous, McTigue took second in Foreign Extemporaneous, Creed Archibald placed first in Impromptu, Jenni Stone-Gerardy was an Impromptu finalist, and Chaace Fessier was a Congress finalist. Green was thrilled with the results, and took a special pride in beating Rowland Hall-St. Mark's, who bested Park City at the district competition. "We beat them pretty handily," he said. "It's the perfect ending to a senior year of debate. . .This is the most cohesive I've ever seen the team." Even for students who failed to grab top spots over the weekend, forensics has been a lesson in self-confidence and personal per-sonal development, Budden said. Sophomore April Finch, a first-year member of the Forensics Team, said speech and debate has helped her become more outgoing. "I'm a pretty bad public speaker. 1 thought debate would help," she said. "I'm not so afraid to talk to people any more. Stone-Gerardy partially joined the team for a little family competition. Her mother was a successful forensics competitor competi-tor in high school, winner of the National Forensics League's 'Double Ruby' honor. "I've just always loved talking and arguing," Stone-Gerardy said. "My mom did a lot of forensics. I decided when I was six I had to beat her." The Park City team, which is not funded fund-ed by the high school, is raising money to send Green and McTigue to the national competition in Charlotte, N.C. in June. Park City residents Kelly and James Thomas donated $4(K) to the high school forensics program after reportedly reading about the team in The Park Record. "We really want to thank the Thomas family," Budden said.
