The fifth generation of the Japanese Camry conveys more than the quality and reliability reliabili-ty that has made Camry "Americas Best Selling" passenger car. The Japanese and Asians plus Koreans have made history in the automotive automo-tive car selling business. At first they may have copied what Americans loved so much. Today they aa' the best in producing cars that the Americans desire. They have produced a wonderful Camry for 21)1)2. It has the first new pl.it form in ten years and the ride and drive are exceptional because of this alone. Toyota spent more on their introduction last fall than any other company had previously pre-viously on an introduction of a sedan. They wanted the customers to say, "1 want that!" It seems as if they have another winner on their hands with the 2002 Camry. Outside the kxk is crisp- as crisp as the handling of the Camry. Inside and out the Camay is bolder, bold-er, smarter (as Toyota says), and refined in every way. The front of the 2002 Camay has an aggressive grill and sharp ait headlamps. The rear tailamps are jewel like. The new platform allows for a wider and taller, with a wheelbase that is two inches longer. Now this Camry has a spacious, open interior. interi-or. The larger car allows for easier entry and exit. As the photo shows the front and rear passengers have plenty of room. The rear passengers passen-gers probably will notice a little more legnxim. The wider and taller stance plus an additional 1.5 inches in rear deliver more for 2002legroom.The Toyota Camry we drove for a week had a nice cloth interior. The seats were comfortable com-fortable and definitely built to handle han-dle abuse over the many years most families will spend in the sedan. Our base Camry LE was perfect for our introduction to the Camry. The same size interior but without the upgraded upholstery or leather available in higher end models. But even so the LE was Toyota's 2002 Camry I .. I- (I : , ; I : l I I l - - - . ' ViiMi - $ , A . : I nr 7i ss. 3 THE 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY not only very respectable but fun to drive. The newly styled front seats offer greater lumbar support and a greater range of seating positions for added comfort while the rear features 6040 fold-down seats. When folded the rear seats add the extra room needed to carry large loads or even those longer skis. Our test Camry was the one that Toyota expects will sell in large quantities. The LE and XLE has the fabric upholstery. Upgrades in upholstery including a design are on the SE but for those who want their Camry with leather they can get it in the XLE or SE models. You also can get it the majority of the models electric seat adjustments alone or in a package At the test track the 2002 Camry proved that it could handle the most difficult with ease. Thanks to the responsive new steering it was effortless to move the car in corners cor-ners or through the pylons. At high speed on the track the noise level inside is low. The front wheel drive, four door family sedan was not the Lexus IS 300 but a lot of fun to drive. One reason was the wonderful 2.4 liter 4 cylinder 16-valve 16-valve engine. This engine is powerful pow-erful and because of variable valve timing is responsive. The four speed automatic transmission is geared for higher shifts. The photos by Bruce Hubbard While the XLE, and you get power driver and passenger seats adjustments, color- : i keyed heated power outside a mirrors, wood-like interior trim bits, automatic climate control with rear seat vents, trip computer with steering-wheel-mounted controls, HomeLink garage door open er, auto-dimming rearview mirror, remote keyless entry,; a rear sunshade and a cargo ; net. ' ; Totoya sells nearly 1400,000 of these American '.; Built cars a year. The majority seems to be the XLE with the four-cylinder engine. Many customers feel that Camry LE is smooth and ideal for the daily activities of the average driver. One thing noticed was in mountain regions the engine braking brak-ing will be nil for the high gear shifting does not give much braking brak-ing on its own when coming down the step inclines. But, brakes vary on the Camry. Our base model stopped well in every situation. Better brakes are on the Camry XLE and SE models. The optional ABS system on the Camry LE was $300 and worth ever dime. ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) is standard on XLE four-cylinder four-cylinder and all V6 models, and optional on LE and SE four-cylinder models. While ABS helps prevent pre-vent the wheels from locking during dur-ing severe braking conditions, EBD detects the differences in front and rear-wheel speeds and dispenses' the proper braking force to all four wheels. The all-new Camry offers more value, with features such as cruise control and power windows included as standard items, as well as a higher level of standard and optional safety equipment and improved crashworthiness. For '02 Camry drops the base CE model and replaces it with a sporty SE version (not offered since '96) that caters to youth, while keeping the familiar LE and XLE models. The SE version even has a rear spoiler and sportier seats to entice the youth market. Even after market suppliers are tooling up for exotic performance accessories acces-sories for the SE. The Camry like many of the upscale sedans in the market today offers safety features like standard next generation air-bags for the front passengers plus side air bags standard. Every 2002 Camry also has front and rear-passenger side curtain-shield SRS airbags. The safety that these offer is exceptional. exception-al. Image in any accident that your head might swing into the side window the protection from the air-curtain will likely save your life. With five generations of Camry's the frame has been improved. Computers have designed frontal and side impact protection into the steel body. Also new for the Camry in 2002 is a safety feature that includes a child restraint anchoring system. Another superb optional safety feature that all V6 Camry's offer is a vehicle skid control (VSC) with brake assist and traction control. Camry will begin offering power adjustable brakegas pedals ped-als as an option so short folks can motor the pedals back to them rather than motor the seat forward to reach the pedals and end up on top of the steering column and the air bag housed inside Our test vehicle the Camry was not designed according to Toyota to meet a price point. It is not luxurious luxu-rious but does deliver a lot of features fea-tures that the customers demanded. demand-ed. Hyundai, Kia and other are delivering a lot of the same features fea-tures at a favorable price but Toyota's edge is owner loyalty and their ability to produce dependable products that outperform in quality. quali-ty. The base price was $19,800 and options that did not include a sunmoonroof($900) included $300 for ABS, $500 for front passenger pas-senger side airbags and aircurtains for both front and rear, premium package 2 that gave some basics like upgraded sound system. Added all in and this was a superb car for $22,201. The dealer will show the Camry potential buyer the different models. mod-els. Some say why spend another $5000 for the XLE. The looks and body and engines are the same in the lower end models. The LE comes with air condi-tioning condi-tioning with air filtration, programmable pro-grammable power door locks, power windows, four-spoke tilt steering wheel, daytime running lights, full size spare, power outside out-side mirrors, cruise control, console, con-sole, rear defogger, map lights, exterior-temperature gauge and vanity mirrors. the 4 cylinder is so sophisti-' . cated and powerful enough -l that why purchase the more expensive 6-cylinder engine. The four now produces 157 horses (5,600 rpm) and 162 foot-pounds' (4,000). The Camry's V6 3.0 liter v engines output is 192 hp (5,300) . and 209 foot-pounds (4,400). It is ' nearly a second faster than the 4 ', ; cylinder in zero to sixty. But, the ' family sedan is not going to the ; drags every week so we love the -four cylinder as a standard. If you want to tow then consider the 6 1 cylinder for it can haul 2000 ' ', pounds. Move those snowmobiles or wave runners with ease. Toyota Camry's can also get one of the best navigational sys- terns made today. The navigation;-system navigation;-system brings with it an upgrade to the premium-level JBL AM-FM" cassette-CD-changer stereo.
