"I came at it with a fresh eye," says Skarstedt. Because most of her drawings are from Stetsons point of view, Skarstedt and Heil did much of their research from a crouched position. They crawled underneath stairs and took photographs while lying on their stomachs. Skarstedt drew almost every day for two months in order to finish the drawings before the Games. That meant asking her mother to babysit her two children every afternoon. As her deadline crept closer, three-hour workdays grew to 12 hours. Skarstedt, who studied music at BYU before she married and had children, said it has always been her dream to become an illustrator. When she was in elementary school, UMFA to This month the Utah Museum of Fine Art (UMFA) unveils a new exhibition, "20th Century Works from the Freedman Collection and UMFA Permanent Collection." The exhibition includes works on loan from Jonathan and Leanne Freedman, featuring art by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Joan Miro, and selected works from the UMFA permanent collection. Among the Warhol works on view are "Mother and Child" (on loan from Eugene and Claire Freedman) and "War Bonnet" from the Cowboys and Indians HOLIDAY VILLAGE CINEMA A BEAUTIFUL MIND PGli 1:00pm 4:00pm 7:00pm 10:00pm COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, THE PG13 USpm 4:10pm 7:15pm 10:10pm CROSSROADS PC I J l:0Opm 4:4"pm 7:30pm 9:50pm LORD OF THE RINGS: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING PGI3 I 2- Wpm 4 1 Snm g:0pm puzzle No. 1226 - T I IHMIIBIM II (J - a librarian used to read to her class from books that had won Caldecott medals, a prize given to children's books. Although she has several favorite illustrators, Skarstedt's style is very much her own. Almost all of the 36 drawings in "Stetson" contain boarders board-ers that feature recognizable images from Park City: cowboy hats, trolleys, trol-leys, lampposts and polished fire hydrants. The drawings, which are a mix of colored pencils and watercolor paints, donl depict every business in show Jasper Johns portfolio; "Lifesavers" from the Ads portfolio; "Uncle Sam" from the Myths portfolio; and "Moonwalk" from the Moonwalk portfolio. According to Mary Francey, Professor of Art History at the University of Utah and curator cura-tor of the exhibition, "Fifteen years after his untimely death, Andy Warhol's work is more relevant rele-vant than ever to the themes by which we identify what is democratic demo-cratic and uniquely American about our society. He drew from a seemingly endless underground of familiar imagery those products and personalities that transcend distinctions of race and class." Of Haring's work, Francey notes, "His visual vocabulary is a direct connection between self-taught self-taught subway graffiti artists and the postmodern response to popular popu-lar expression." In addition, the UMFA will dis: play selected works from its 20th-century 20th-century collection including prints by Mark Tobey, Jacob Lawrence, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner and a rare monoprint by Jasper Johns, on display for the first time in the UMFA.
