Show Wednesday, January 17, 2001 The Park Record A-13 Term-limit law on the chopping block Recent Doll indicates nearly fi7 rwrent of Utah residents want to keep law SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Utah's 12-year term limits law may be jerked from the books before it affects its first set of lawmakers, despite widespread public support. House Majority Whip David Ure. R-Kamas. is sponsoring a bill to repeal the term-limit law. which was enacted in 1994 to stave off a petition drive. The first group of lawmakers could be ousted in 2006. However, a new copyright Deseret NewsKSL-TV poll shows that nearly 67 percent of Utah residents want to keep the law. while 27 percent want it done away with. Bart Grant, the head of Utah Term Limits, said Ure's bill is premature. "We need to be patient, wait and see what happens" when the current law takes effect, said Grant, who has already contacted U.S. Term Limits, a national group that has supported term limit petition drives in the past. The term-limit law was adopted in 1994 when Merrill Cook, then an independent candidate can-didate for the 2nd Congressional District, spear headed an initiative drive. The initiative made it onto the ballot, but the Legislature passed a term-limit bill, which sapped momentum and the ballot measure meas-ure failed. Cook, who recently lost a reelection re-election bid for the U.S. House, said it would be wrong to repeal the bill. "It would be a very cynical thing to do." he said. "We d have to consider (initiative) action again." For the last two years. Ure has sponsored bills to repeal term-limits. term-limits. Last year, he argued that turnover in the Legislature has been high and the limits arent needed. The bills passed the House each time, but Senate leaders kept them from going to a vote. But now there are new leaders in the Senate, and it is possible the bill could get a vote in that chamber. Of the 104 part-time lawmakers lawmak-ers sitting in 1994, only 24 of 75 House members and nine of 29 senators are still in their respective respec-tive bodies and subject to term limits in 2006, should they still be serving and seek re-election that year. The poll of 405 Utah residents was conducted in late December by Dan Jones & Associates. It has a margin of error of 5 percentage points. Dan Jones also conducts polling for the Utah Republican Party and GOP candidates. Judge gives the go-ahead on AOL lawsuit SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Three former employees of America Online have been allowed to go ahead with their lawsuit against the company, which fired them for having guns in their office parking lot. Second District Judge Roger S. Dutson refused AOL's request to dismiss the wrongful-termination suit filed in September by Luke Hansen. Paul Carlson and Jason Melling. AOL. which bans employees from carrying weapons on company com-pany property, argues that the mo naa agreea io mat policy when they were hired. The nation's largest Internet provider contends that carrying firearms to work endangers the safety of other workers. The company has also argued that Utah code allows it to fire workers unless doing so violates the public interest. But the three men, who are seeking undisclosed damages, say Utah's gun laws let concealed weapons permit holders carry their firearms to work, even if they work at a private company. Hansen. Melling and Carlson say tney were meeting in a park ing lot outside AOL's Ogden call center before driving to a shooting shoot-ing range in Eden four days before they were -fired. On that day, Melling and Carlson carried two rifles and two pistols from their cars to Hansen's truck. The weapons were unloaded and all but one rifle were in cases. At the time, Hansen and Carlson held concealed-carry permits issued by the state of Utah, while Melling was in the process of getting one. Hansen said the case is an important test of Utah's gun laws. "Every hunter in Utah has driven to work with his gun in his truck so he can go hunting after work," he said after filing the lawsuit. "So we're looking for clarification to say, yeah, state law says we can do this, or no, if it's interpreted another way, that we can't." Two gun-owners groups have urged a boycott of AOL over the firings,' and the Utah Society of Human Resource Managers, with help from former Utah Gov. Calvin Rampton, had filed a friend-of-the-court brief seeking dismissal of the lawsuit. Bogus Olympic official swindles Salt Lake banks Usina a fake Russian Dassoort. man is accused of conning $90,000 from five banks SALT LAKE CITY (AP) man claiming to be a Russian Olvmpic official swindled five Utah banks out of nearly $90,000. federal authorities said. Now he has the U.S. Secret Service hunting for him. The heavyset, goateed man used the name Anton Canapouski. said he was 53 and claimed to be in Salt Lake City doing advance work for the Russian Olympic team leading up to the 2002 Winter Games. Along with a 30-ish female interpreter, using the name Natalie Koropski, he went from bank to bank to open several checking accounts, using a fake Russian passport and the address of an empty apartment he had rented. About a month later, the man deposited 13 checks he had probably prob-ably printed on a dot matrix printer, then cleaned out the accounts a few days later before the forgeries were detected, said Special Agent Kim Fitzgerald. In the span of three days in late August, the swindlers made off with nearly $90,000 from at least five banks, including some of the state's largest, she said. "Unfortunately, we anticipate this type of activity only increasing increas-ing as we get closer to the Olympics as wctf'jjets; out that' the bankingcommunity in Utah' may be ripe for the picking," said Michael Fithen, the resident agent in charge of the Salt Lake City Secret Service office. investigators have 21 pictures from bank surveillance cameras that they hope someone will recognize. rec-ognize. "We're pretty confident that we're going to get them identified," identi-fied," Fithen said. Investigators are skeptical that the swindlers were Russian or if they ever spoke Russian during their transactions. www.parkrecord.com www.parkrecord.com Hake the career change you'll never regret.
