Laser corrective surgery available to farsighted people with astigmatism The Eye Institute of Utah is now performing laser vision correction cor-rection surgery for patients with combined farsightedness and astigmatism, thanks to new technology tech-nology developed by V1SX Inc. The U.S. Food and Drug administration adminis-tration (FDA) recently approved the use of the VISX STAR Eximer Laser Systems as safe and effective for the treatment of these patients. Dr. Andrew Lyle. Eye Institute medical director said. "Traditionally the best candidates for laser vision correction surgery have been those w ith nearsightedness. nearsighted-ness. Now we have the capability to perform the laser surgery for people whose eyes are either nearsighted or farsighted with astigmatism. In other words, the new laser system can treat nearly all corneal shapes. This is great news for a whole new group of people who wear corrective lenses." lens-es." Dr Lyle explained that the new VISX technology now includes an active three-dimensipnal eye-tracking eye-tracking system. This automatically automati-cally tracks eye movement allow -ing for a more precise laser treatment treat-ment of the cornea. According to Dr. Lyle. this is very useful during vision correction surgery for patients with excessive eye movement move-ment due to anxiety or other causes. The new laser also can be adjusted to treat w ith a variety of beam sizes which is useful for patients with larger pupils. A competing technology known as LTK can correct patients with farsightedness by heating the cornea. This procedure proce-dure is quick, but leaves the patients vision blurry at a dis tance for up to six months with temporary nearsightedness. It does not correct farsightedness combined with astigmatism, and does not have the accuracy of the Eximer laser. Dr. Lyle said. "The bottom line is, the new VISX technology opens the laser vision correction option to a broader ranee of peo-Pie." peo-Pie." Established in 1QS1. This publication is excerpted from a recently released book "Safety and You." which is a comprehensive guide on safety by the Honorable Nancy Harvey Steorts. former Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Find out how you can prevent fires, protect yourself with smoke detectors and fire extin guishers, keep carbon monoxide out of your home, and develop an emergency home escape plan for your famiiy. The first step in protecting your family from fires is learning how to prevent them. Avoid common safety safe-ty hazards: donl plug too many appliances into one electrical outlet, out-let, be sure to keep combustibles away from heaters, stoves and fireplaces, fire-places, and donl use damaged or frayed electrical or extension cords. Protecting your family from carbon car-bon monoxide (CO) can be more difficult ills colorless, odorless and tasteless. And CO symptoms mimic those of the flu. so they can easily be missed during routine medical examinations. Your best protection against CO poisoning is proper maintenance of combustion appliances and a CO alarm for your home. The alarm will signal your family when CO levels in your home reach dangerous levels and give you time to get out before getting get-ting sick.
