Many were new public spaces or improvements to existing places where people gathered. The Olympics provided a number of opportunities for people to come together to create cre-ate long-lasting benefits attributable to Sydney as an OKnipic aty. I am confident that a similar book can be written writ-ten about OKmpic legacies in our area. Maybe we won It have UK) here in Park City, but around the 2002 Olympic theater. I think a book could and should be written about the public benefits that come from our Olympic participation. If I run out of things to do. max be I'll wnte it mxself. Last week one such Iceacv was dedicated here in Park City We have a new park a park dedicated to the Olympics, and to our alpine spo,rts environment, and in a place where you might least expect it. I suspect many of you max not have even noticed. Since this column will come out at a time when our community is beginning to hustle with our Christmas visitors. I suggest ou locals who have yet to visit the Olympic Welcome Plaa. join our visitors and get a dose of Christmas and Olympic spirit at the same time. Remember the old car w ash next to the Mt. Air Cafe? The city Knight the property a few years ago and tore the car wash down. It was partially landscaped to tidy up a bit. then it was just a matter mat-ter of waiting for someone to think of a good use. Then, presto, an idea was bom. A number of community leaders had been trying to identify a good public gathering place in celebration of the Olympics. To use a time worn Utah phrase, this might be just the place. Well, to make a kng. and not often easy, story snort, the city donated the land, the Chamber of Commerce raised some money, and a citizens group went to work on the design. No bonds were passed, no taxes raised, and there was no controversy. contro-versy. It sounds like an exercise in public'pnvate partnerships that might be i question on a final exam in a political science class. The real magic didnl happen until the architects and contractors did their thing and a local citien. Bill Brown, went to work as a project manager on his own time, because he wanted to. because it meant something to him. Now. after all the problems were sohed what should it kxk like? what about the odd shaped site? where will we get the money? where will people park? would anyone care? what about all the bordering property? who will maintain it? we have a little gem nght in the middle of ooe They didn 't do it for the money, or to get their name in the paper. Many were just folks who chose to get involved. " -Frank Bell of the most urban areas in Park City Now being urban in Park City is like being the best haUet dancer in Laredo. Texas, but we all know that, other than remaikabk' accident avoidance maneuvers maneu-vers routinely practiced, the intersection of S.R. 224 and S R. 24S is not a very endearing place. So. next time you are in trie neighborhood, stop in and visit one ci your Olympic legacies. Walk through and see the string of towers dedicated to all of the Winter Olympic cities (count them and trace the history of the Winter Games), and stop by the medals podiums bracketed by lowers identifying iden-tifying our kal Olympic events. You can kk up Jo the race run at Park City MiHintam Resort With a link furniture to be added next summer, it will be a great place to come and take a break. Maxtx; you can use the plaa as a place to think about the Olympic principles of peace and international inter-national understanding: think about the athletes who participate from all oxer the world: and think about our kxral athletes who have worked so hard to put their home field on the map. Best of all. the plaza opened at Christmas. The towers are gently lighted. The trees, still young and just taking root, are a mass of white twirkle lights one of the symbols of the 2112 Games. It's a great Christmas scene. So. when you dnxe through the intersection, instead of beating the yclknt light. skw down and kiok at the plaza. Take a minute and enjoy a new public space in Park City that otrt be in front of the Planning Commission as a devekpment parceL The next time you have a meal at the Mount Air. attend a meeting at the Yarrow, or shop at the Snow Creek Plaza, take some extra time and walk through- You will kam something about the Olympics, but more importantly, you will leam something about your town. The people inxohed in this project pro-ject created a little magic for Park City and for you. They didni do it for the money, or to get their name in the paper. Manx were just folks who chose to get inxohed AH of them probably had more lucrative things to do. Each of us will participate in. or cekbrate. the Olympics in our own way. When the Games are over, this plaza wiD remind us of our Olympic heritage her-itage for many years to come. Thanks fix this new park, folks 1 think it's great. As Tiny Tim would say ab.xit this time of year. "God Ness them exery one." Because many of our regular xisitors are in town oxer the next two or three weeks. I will spend some time reviewing some Olympic basics traffic, parking and all that stuff.
