Show B-8 The Park Record Wednesday, November 8, 2000 Talking Shop Women and investing by John Jaicks RECORD GUEST WRITER Not so long ago. the majority of American women left their financial finan-cial affairs largely in the hands of husbands, fathers or other male relatives. Even though a households house-holds day-to-day purchases were usually made by wives and mothers, moth-ers, most of a family's major financial finan-cial decisions were handled by men. Changes This financial dependence, however, has begun to change. Today, more and more women work outside the home, earning more than ever before - although on average still not as much as their male counterparts. Similarly, the number of businesses owned by women has never been higher, and ni3ny women occupy top executive positions within some of Americas leading corporations. Despite these gains - and although women have become an economic force in their own right - in many cases they are not nearly as comfortable com-fortable w:th investing as are men. Women, regardless of income level, can help narrow this gap by-taking by-taking control of their own financial finan-cial futures. Just as making money is a process that has to be learned, so, too, is managing its growth. As you will read, knowledgeable investing is an essential skill few women can afford to be without. Gender differences At first glance, investing mav Internet appliances will take hold soon Continued from B-7 They dent do everything a PC does; they arent supposed to. The home version - typically called Internet or information appliances - are devices that have been optimized for a particular function. For instance, as a kitchen appliance your toaster is great at cooking bread slices, but lousy at n ashing dishes. 3Com just released an Internet appliance called Audrey - adept at email functionality, function-ality, but worthless for data processing. pro-cessing. 3Com touts Audrey (at $500 Usf) " as a simple, convenient kitchen or family room "nerve center" for home users desiring one-touch access to e-mail. Internet channels, a family calendar, calen-dar, address book - plus the ability to synchronize information with Palm PDAs. It's not designed to be a surfing machine or a word processor the kids w ill use to write school papers. If an easy-to-use family message mes-sage center with quick access to Tax Masters, Inc. Such an assumption, however, overlooks the unique obstacles faced by women as they try to attain their financial goals. For example, most women face a more challenging path to retirement retire-ment than men. due in part to their longer life expectancies. Because a woman will live, on average, about seven years longer than a man, her retirement fund will have to last correspondingly longer. Compounding the problem, prob-lem, women in general earn less than men and are more likely to interrupt their careers in order to help raise a family. These factors not only reduce their earnings over the course of a lifetime, but also have a serious negative impact on their retirement benefits bene-fits such as Social Security payments pay-ments and company-sponsored pension plans. In addition, as the number of single-parent households headed by women w ho either choose not to marry or w ho are divorced continues con-tinues to grow, it "s clear that most women will spend at least part of their adult lives alone.' This fact is reason enough to put the creation of an investment plan at the top of every woman's "to-do" list. Getting started Having an investment plan can weather, news and local event listings list-ings has appeal, Audrey delivers. It has a small form (not the huge PC footprint), a nice design, and it comes in several colors. Family friendly features include: E-mail versatility. Audrey lets you type a message, use the stylus to write it by hand, or send it via voice. The device's flashing green lights automatically let you know you have new e-mail without needing need-ing to check in. Calendaring efficiency. Again, you can type or scribble entries on a datebook. You can also set an atarm to go off as a reminder before an event. 1ft straightforward, straightfor-ward, easy interface that could help keep a family organized - if everyone committed to using it. Some people will have trouble switching from their current wall calendar or dozens of notes stuck under refrigerator magnets. - Millions of families use AOL and MSN as their Internet service providers. But how and where do you start? Checking the newspaper for a locally-sponsored financial seminar semi-nar is an excellent first step. In the interim, you can begin drawing up a basic plan on your own. Start by objectively examining your current financial status, then, with the help of a financial adviser, work out a practical means of reaching your financial goals. Take into account your income and spending levels, the cost of living and your projected investment returns. Be sure the plan remains flexible, flexi-ble, in order to deal with unexpected unex-pected life changes, and review it at regular intervals. Traditional methods of savings such as interest-bearing bank accounts and CDs may not provide pro-vide a sufficient rate of return to meet your long-term financial goals. Fortunately, many alternatives alterna-tives exist. Every investment vehicle has its own advantages and disadvantages disadvan-tages and these should be fully examined before any investment decisions are made. Regardless of which vehicles you choose, it's important to begin following your plan as soon as possible. The next generation Looking ahead, one way in which women can help their daughters and sons prepare for a fiscally responsible adulthood is to start their financial education at an early age. As is true when learning any new skill, the earlier your son or daughter begins their lessons on finance and investing, the better the results will be. They should not be expected to master a consoli major hurdle that could turn off a lot of users. Like a television, the device has a knob you turn to get various Internet channels. It comes preprogrammed pre-programmed with AccuWeather.com, ABCNews and several others. Click on some of the channels, though, and all you get is a "coming soon" message. mes-sage. Eventually you will be able to add your ow n channels. Button confusion. Do you poke it, press it or turn it? There are three different kinds of buttois on Audrey's exterior, plus several conventions on the touch screen. It may take time for new users to get them straight. The tiny keyboard key-board will also be a challenge for those accustomed to the full-size version. As a message center, Audrey has potential; broadband support and Palm synchronization are major pluses. Audrey wont replace a PC, but that's not what the device is about. With a sometimes-bewildering array of unfamiliar terms, the world of investing can seem a terribly ter-ribly complicated one to a child or a teenager. It can even be perplexing perplex-ing to many adults. But think of it as being not all that different from learning to drive. Your child wont be able to get a driver's license without understanding such unfamiliar unfa-miliar terms as brake, transmission and accelerator, and then, when old enough, practicing under your supervision. Similarly, your children won't be aole to become competent investors without first learning the financial basics.
