The blown knee was so obvious that Friedman skied down on one ski and immediately asked his coach to take him to the hospital. "Unfortunately my story's not so gruesome (as Saunders"), but it takes its toll either way." he said. The 19 year-old Dartmouth College sophomore spent his three-month recovery time in the classroom. In return, the recovering racer puts in about 20 hours per week waxing and grinding skis. "I help them out and they make my skis fast. They're gonna be rolling - they're rockets," said Friedman who explained that skis need 30-40 waxings once taken out of the box before they are in prime condition. "I thought. "Man, I'm gonna finish this race, no matter what." It's so frastrating..jo frustrating. It's never happened to me before; you hear it happening to others and I've thought. "Oh. that's too bad' but you dont think about it much. But when it happens to you..." Still, she said. Wagner - a racer at Western State College and U.S. team member a year ago - is planning plan-ning on racing in Europe. She'll pay her way to compete for more experience. "I think I'll be racing strong. I've had so much good training..." So. for Wagner, it's also one down, two to go - one month of 2000 down. February-March to go. She said she'll be ready.
