PCMR launches legacy Ricte Program by Dsrak Jmismi OF THE RECORD STAFF On Saturday night 200 girls and boys turned out at Park City Mountain Resort's First Time run. anxious to get free ski lessons les-sons as well as a glimpse of gold medalist Picabo Street. They got both during the resort's kick off of the Legacy Ski and Ride Program - a three-year three-year learn to ski or snowboard program, which offers free lift tickets, equipment and three-hour three-hour lessons. The event was attended by Salt Lake Organizing Committee President Mitt Romney, PCMR President and General Manager, Vern Greco, and Street, who said she was excited to teach kids who have never tried the sports before. "What better way to get kids excited about the Olympics than to teach them how to ski and snowboard where the same sports will be competed in 2002." Street said. The program, which actually started the weekend before, looks to be generating ample excitement. "It's been a resounding success suc-cess so far," said Melissa O'Brien. PCMR Communications Manager. "We get like 100 calls an hour to sign up." The average age of the kids is 10 and the majority come from the Wasatch Front. But some enrollees come from far corners of the state including American Fork, Hill Air Force Base, Tooele and Vernal. If the program continues to produce 200 kids per night O'Brien estimates 4.000 will receive free lessons this season alone. Currently the lessons run from 6-9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays with a hot chocolate and cookie break somewhere in the middle there," but could extend to weekday evenings next season. Over a dozen PCMR instructors instruc-tors work with groups of eight during each three-hour lesson. Once kids get their equipment they are paired up with the instructors who take them on the hilL According to O'Brien the format works well. "When you're a beginner it's much better to be in a group format for-mat because you learn quicker," she said. Parents and city council members mem-bers were invited to the event so resort officials could thank them for their interest and support. Ending on a high note, the Utah Synchronized Skiers, a group of PCMR and Deer Valley ski instructors, glided dow n Picabo's run to the delight of the young newcomers.
