Bulldogs drop the Lady Miners Girls freshmensophomore team shuts down Bulldog point guard but not her teammates The Lady Miners freshmensophomore basketball team faced an undefeated (7-0) Judge Bulldog team last Friday at Park City High School. By game's end, the Bulldogs improved to 8-0, but the Lady Miners continue to improve. "I see girls out there doing things better all the time," said varsity coach John Bartleson, Samantha Sheldon led all Lady Miners with 13 points in the 54-33 loss. Candice Lukenback scored nine and Amanda Smith had 10. Part of Park City's troubles came from the free-throw line and turnovers. Park City shot 10 of 41 from the line and committed commit-ted 21 turnovers. Park City shot 10 for 28 from the field. The JV and varsity teams did not play. Judge outscored Park City 18-9 18-9 in the first quarter. The Lady Miners then stepped it up in the second scoring only three fewer points than Judge. "We played pretty well there for a while," said Bartleson. Judge had two twins and a point guard that did most of their scoring, according to Bartleson. After the first quarter, freshman Amanda Smith covered Judge's top scorer in a box defense which "shut her down," said Bartleson. The freshmensophomore team, as well as JV and varsity, played Friday in a region matchup match-up against Uintah. Individual scorers: Candice Lukenback, 9; Ann Beck, 1; Louise Stephens, 1; Amanda Smith, 10, Jen Joseph, 2; Samantha Sheldon, 13. Lanning tops in Hartlauer Memorial Brighton held a South Series GS race Jan. 24 and 25. It was in memory mem-ory of two of their athletes who will killed in a car crash coming home from a race in Montana in June, 1997. Chris and Travis Hartlauer were great athletes and role models to all who knew them. Each athlete who participated received a T-shirt with a special poem on it, written in memory of the boys by fellow teammate and accident survivor Adam Phillips with the help of his dad, Kelly. The race was an opportunity for some who loved them and all those who called them friend, to say so long and race with them one last time. They were loved by some and missed by all. There was a special overall trophy tro-phy that was presented to T.J. Lanning who was a friend of the boys, for his outstanding first-place wins on both days. Monica Hartlauer, the boys' sister, also skied strong and hard to get her name on the trophy by taking first place both days for the women. Both of these athletes showed that they were skiing this race in Chris' and Travis' memory. The race was open to the following fol-lowing age classes: J5 (9-10 year old); J4 (11-12); J3 (13-14); J2 (15-16); (15-16); and Jl (17-18). The Park City Ski Team women who placed on Saturday in the J3s are Krista Brandel (2nd), Piper Bohn (3rd), and Yanni Swing (13th). The J4 girls were Meredith Sletton (2nd) and Lisa Jones (3rd). Among the Park City boys, Jason Jones came in 6th for the J2s, while the J3s dominated as follows: Lanning (1st), Travis Gaylord (2nd), John Martz (3rd), Jack Stephens (4th) and Chris Newey (5th). The other team members who gave the competition com-petition a run for its money were Trevor Olch (6th), Andrew Colburn (9th), Tomi Waldburger (11th), Andrew Wallman (12th), Ted Ligety (14th), and Kyle Carlson (33rd). David Bier, a J4, placed 10th overall and 1st for the J4s, showing the big guys what it's all about. With a J4 sweep Bier's fellow teammates placed as follows: fol-lows: Jacob Dudek (2nd); Kerry Nierenberg (3rd), Bryon Bolda l ill.
