And it was a big one. Jacobi beat out one of the country's coun-try's top Laser sailors and 1996 Olympic qualifier Nick Adamson to take the 1997 Laser Midwinters West Championship at Long Beach. Calif. "Adamson kind of stomped all of us in the Olympic trials. ..it was a real shot in the arm for me to beat him." Jacobi said. His lst-place finish qualified him for one of the 13 North American spots in the 1998 Laser World Championship. Jacobi. who hopes to sail in the 2000 Summer Olympics, had not sailed since October, but traveled to California a week before the races to get accustomed to the choppy water and large sw ells. "It's a real change for us lake sailors." said Jacobi. who frequently frequent-ly races at Deer Creek Reservoir. "I felt great, a lot better than I thought I would." Jacobi was in 2nd place after Friday's qualifying races and the first round Saturday. But his finishes finish-es were good enough on Sunday to edge out Adamson who lives in Newport Beach. Calif. Putting on some weight has helped Jacobi handle the one-man race boat he is now up to 170 lbs. from 153. "and hanging on to it." The added weight comes at a key time, the race rules recently changed, banning weight belts to help sailors hold down their boats in strong winds. Jacobi said the winds off Long Beach were strong the week before the races but lightened considerably consider-ably dunne competition. Despite being $25,000 in debt from his last campaign to sail in the Olympics. Jacobi is setting his sights on the Sydney, Australia Summer Games and is looking for sponsors. Doug DuBois and Jim Sheldon, both from Park City, also raced at Long Beach. Other Utah sailors at the races included: Marshall Pardey. 41st in the Gold Fleet: Lainie Pardey, 11th in the Silver Fleet (top woman and 2nd master): and 17-year-old Robin Pardey. 26th in the Silver Fleet. Jacobi and Adamson were followed fol-lowed by Brian Camet. San Diego Yacht Club; Shawn Walton. Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and Keith Dodson. Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. As a result of his victory, the United States Sailing Association, the governing body for American sailing, nominated Jacobi as its Athlete of the Month. As such, his name will be sent to the United States Olympic Committee who also awards an Athlete of the Month for the entire U.S.O.C. i r&rt T - JL Z - .;y " j1 "'"iswf " I PHOTOS COURTESY MARC JACOBI Park City Yacht Club sailor Marc Jacobi won his first race of the season, the Midwinters West Championship in California. ITALIX transitional tran-sitional END ITAL cloudiness. cloudi-ness. The acro-skiing Friday (won by Park City's Maria Guarnieri) was staged in bright sunshine and 50-degree toastiness. U.S. Ski Team chief Bill Marolt wasn't the only one who was reaching for sunscreen and a water bottle in the finish area. Saturday, the forecast was for rain and fog but the first run of moguls was held in continued broiling sunshine but the clouds rolled in for the final run. Sunday, the top of the mountain moun-tain was in pea soup fog but the aerials contest at the base drew hundreds and, despite some occasional wind gusts, went off with barely a hiccup of interruption; interrup-tion; Park City aerialists were 2-3-5-6 among the gents and 2-3 among the gentles. The toasty temps made for soft snow and when the clouds rolled in. it further muddied the snow conditions, making things semi-slushy and a little grippy. Soft snow creates particularly tricky conditions for aerialists. who have to keep finding the right start spot for their approach to the jump. Or, as Nikki Stone said after collecting silver Sunday, "Not a lot of fun." First prize in each contest was $2,000 with a thousand greenbacks green-backs for a silver medal. $500 for bronze. Among the highlights, by event: Aero (Friday): Guarnieri, who's set-up housekeeping in Park City while training and attending the University of Utah, took the women's acro-skiing acro-skiing title. It was a popular victory vic-tory for Guarnieri, who spent most of the winter on her couch, resting a herniated disc in her back: the championships were only her second contest of tr?e season. "Yeah. I know all the TV shows. Rosie O'Donnell's my favorite." Guarnieri told one journalist, who conceded he was a Rosie fan, too. She had two injections to help subdue the disc, she said. Still on her agenda: more rest. "1 feel like I had a whole season wrapped up in this one day." she said. 3 Moguls (Saturday): Arin Battelle. who won her first World Cup bumps contest in the World Cup Finals in Sweden t)o weeks earlier, overtakes Donna Weinbrecht for her third U.S. title. Power, a stringbean from Missoula who was third in a Deer Valley NorAm in December, takes the men's event while Sean Smith leading the Park City Boyz in eighth place. Aerials (Sunday): Two silvers, two bronzes for Park City. Joe Pack, whose family moved to Park City a few years ago when he left ski jumping for freestyle, and 1995 world and World Cup aerials champion Nikki Stone, who's taking classes at the U. while she trains at Utah Winter Sports Park, were each second (behind Eric Bergoust and Kriste Porter). Tracy Evans and Todd Loveless, who've also both moved to town in recent years, were each third in aerials. Further along on the men's side, Brian Currutt and Jerry Grossi finished 5-6. "Not too many surprises. Except in men's moguls where Donovan Power, a newcomer from Montana, upended the pack, the World Cup skiers did what they should have done,," said Wayne Hilterbrand, head coach of the U.S. team and yet another Park City local.
