Show Wednesday, April 2, 1997 The Park Record Pastor to guide Ohio flock Miller leaves in June for Toledo by Adam Elggren OF THE RECORD STAFF Though not an actual "buckeye," Marc Miller is going home to the Midwest. A native of the Chicago area, the pastor of the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church is moving mov-ing to Ohio in June, where he will preach to a Toledo congregation. Miller's wife. Sue (who is a "buckeye," "buck-eye," having grown up in Ohio), recently completed an internship at the University of Utah Medical Center and received an offer of residency resi-dency at a Toledo hospital. Miller's replacement could come as early as September, said the pastor, pas-tor, but will likely take over closer to November. The church normally allows an interim time period between pastors, said Miller, "so the congregation can kind of step back and feel where it is." "This is about the 12th time Sue and I have moved," said Miller, who came to Utah in 1993 so Sue could begin her internship. He stressed that it is the residency that spurred the move, and not a recent Park Record story that proved controversial. controver-sial. "I've had a couple of people ask me, 'Was it that Park Record article'?'" arti-cle'?'" said Miller. "No. The residency residen-cy was totally the motivating force behind us leaving. When I came here, I told them I'd stay at Shepherd of the Mountain for at least four years. Little did I know it would be exactly four." Though grateful for the conversations conver-sations it inspired among himself, his congregation and other religious leaders. Miller says he wishes the Record article, which appeared in the Jan. 15 Park Record Profile, had given more attention "to the positive posi-tive aspects of my relationship with 1 " 4 ft -t f AC- I I ADAM ELGGRENPAflK RECORD Pastor Marc Miller of the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church will take wisdom gleaned from his experiences in Park City to Toledo, Ohio this summer. Instead, the story focused largely on Miller's penchant for preaching against greed and materialism subjects sub-jects which he said can sometimes strike close to the heart of his congregation's con-gregation's membership. Miller said it is difficult to find anything controversial about most of his sermons. They're usually what he calls "strong. Christian pastoral sermons," and though they may contain con-tain hard truths, are less controversial controver-sial than the story may have made them appear. That doesn't mean Miller has backed down from engaging engag-ing his congregation on the more controversial issues, he said. "When you're in the line of fire, I think it means you're doing something some-thing right," said Miller, who seems to thrive on friendly confrontation. Anyone who witnessed Miller recently acquire a 12-stitch cut above his left eye during a basketball basket-ball game can attest to that. During his four years, attendance at Shepherd of the Mountains has climbed from about 100 on a typical Sunday to almost 200. Miller said that "dealing with confrontations on a very direct level has provided the climate for us to be successful." Of course, healthy attendance is not the only standard Miller holds himself to. He said every minister asks himself,"Is what I'm doing A: faithful and B: successful? A true Christian ministry can be both faithful faith-ful and successful. I guess that's part of my satisfaction of being pastor at Shepherd of the Mountains."
