The Badami Gallery at the Kimball Art Center will host the Milton E. Swenson "Park City, Past" exhibit July 14-Aug. 21. Swenson was born in 1898 in Murray, Utah. He studied art at the University of Utah, and furthered fur-thered his education as the Chicago Art Institute. He began work as a commercial illustrator and art director at the Bigelow Press Calendar Co. in Chicago in 1921. He worked throughout the Depression as the only artist on staff. He transferred to St. Paul Minnesota when Bigelow Press Calendar Co. merged with Brown and Bigelow. Swenson spent his weekends and painting or photographing surrounding landscapes. The Chicago and Minneapolis Art Institutes purchased pur-chased Swenson's work for their permanent collections. He is known for his effective control and contrast of transparent washes. Swenson returned to the Salt Lake area in 1948 and continued work as a freelance illustrator, painter and photographer. He enjoyed painting trips to the 'mountains of Utah, and in the late '60s, he discovered Park City. Swenson realized that soon the charming ghost-town mining structures, houses, and shanties would be demolished, and began artistic studies in the areas. Paintings like "Park City Shadow Ladder" depict our charismatic town. Swenson is a part of Park City's history.
