It's a Long Way to Tipperary...but not too far when you sniff big natural energy reserves. There is talk of moving natural gas technology, equipment and expertise from Weld County, Colo, to the border country of Ireland. The Denver-Julesburg Basin in eastern Colorado used to be one of the most productive gas development areas in the country but it is now nearly shut down. Prices have made low-volume wells unprofitable. Talks are in progress with Irish authorities about the move from Colorado to Ireland which has the gas but not the facilities or expertise. Natural gas and oil resources will lure western energy experts and investors to even more exotic places. Exploration is or will be taking place in locations like Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Siberia. Huge resources have also been identified in several areas of the far east much of it offshore. Beef Prices Drop.. .while the - " J V? t - , - 'Paw C- :'l v' T "W-v - - . n 1 . .-imp. Sr, ' I If acrimonious public lands debate continues. Part of the debate is centered on grazing, where and when livestock should be permitted on public lands, and how much user fees should be charged. While this discussion continues-and not at all related to the debate-cattle prices have been dropping substantially and some agriculture economies predict that the prices may not rebound until the end of the century. Prices have dropped below the break-even point for some producers which means that ranches are going on the market. Analysts give various reasons for the drop in prices such as increased world production and changes in eating habits. Public lands grazing is important to the ranchers in the west because the production of beef is constrained by the lack of rangeland. Once ranchers are forced to turn to grain for additional production of beef, the more efficient converters of grain, such as pigs- and - chickens, wgainan J advantage. - . - ,;" , In the United States, most chickens and "pigs are raised in highly mechanized, huge corporate production plants and not on traditional farms. ' Much of the product is .shipped abroad where there is a big world market for meat. Pork is the most popular meat, followed by beef, with poultry in third place. If grain prices rise in the years ahead, poultry will overtake beef production, moving into second place behind pork. All of this means the beef industry is facing an unsettled future. tfueiii wan mm mm wm TOIL1 Ml mum 0: mxov T T t ' -It- ' "" ' LIGHTEN UP.
