To Renew America is loaded with similar assertions, and my purpose pur-pose is really not to debate Newt Gingrich's political philosophy. Rather, I think it important to evaluate eval-uate this book for what it is, and what it isn't. To remember that these are the words of one of the highest constitutional offers of the American government, not Rush Limbaugh or Gordon Liddy. Of greater interest, at least to me, is another aspect of both the Speaker and his book. Gingrich has a deep understanding of the new relationship among communication, the media, polling data, image and how they relate to persuasion; which is, of course, the essence of campaigning. He knows that politicians politi-cians who best utilize current technology tech-nology and trends gain a huge advantage over the competition. He's learned well the lessons of FDR's use of radio and JFK's use of television. Mr. Gingrich has also understood under-stood the importance of charisma, and how this amorphous trait can be emulated by those who may not possess it naturally. While these observations may seem old news at this point, how many of the hundreds hun-dreds of politicians on the national stage actually excite and motivate people?. His models, especially Ronald Reagan, weren't magic, but they did have an extraordinary ability to touch people's emotions. Gingrich has studied the elements of this talent tal-ent and tries to incorporate them into his own style. Frequent references to Lincoln, both Roosevelts and Reagan, among others, most often reference their ability to rouse the public - in other words, their style. He's perceived per-ceived that we still respond to calls to the American mythology, and tries to place himself in that context with statements like, "Finally, I shall explore the romantic idealism that led our Founding Fathers to pledge their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to their ' country and suggest a twenty-first-century vision worthy of that same kind of commitment." The obvious intent is for us to see him in those same terms. Newt Gingrich has also identified identi-fied another important element of political success: a platform. He's managed to transform the House Speakership, traditionally the ultimate ulti-mate back-room power base, into a very public bully pulpit, garnering equal media time and prestige with that of the Presidency. This is unprecedented in modern politics. Think about Tom Foley, Jim Wright, even Tip O'Neil. They had power within their own ranks, but who can remember ever being exposed to their personal vision or political philosophy? To Renew America is crafted to combat negative reactions to the "old" Newt, often referred to as a bombthrower. Here, he attempts to elevate himself as a kind of ' American Prime Minister. Newt Gingrich has observed and under stood what we want from our lead- ' ers. He understands that we have ' always responded to leaders who challenge us to be better, and then convince us they believe we can be better. . He also understands that today's-problems today's-problems are so complex and over--whelming, that, given a choice, " ura'11 occAnf nnctnloif rpfpxP.nrftS tct " " . . . , the mythic American pasi wee rree beer on the Fourth of July. To Renew America is not a bad book because I disagree with much of what it proposes. For me, its problems lie with its superficial ' treatment of serious national prob- ' A lAnrr nrAeA oHamnt CU1U U1V HVH!; iiuuvw Htiviui to "renew" Mr. Gingrich's public persona. New Gingrich may be running run-ning for President, or perhaps he just likes going to New Hampshire. Whatever his plan, it's clear from To Renew America, that Newt Gingrich is running for American Hero. Utah Opera announces 1995-96 season Two of the most beloved operas in the traditional tradi-tional repertoire, La Boheme and The Barber of Seville, escort a new work, Dreamkeepers, into the limelight of Utah Opera's 18th season. The company's 1995-96 season offers audiences the exceptional opportunity to attend the world premiere pre-miere of a major operatic work and experience the classics performed with the distinguished artistry for which Utah Opera has achieved acclaim. The luscious music of Puccini's La Boheme captures the passion and pathos of a young Bohemian romance in Paris of the 1840s. Into a carefree circle of struggling artists step two women, one tender and frail, the other impertinent imperti-nent and voluptuous. A tragic illness unites the friends in a close circle of devotion and compassion. compas-sion. In Dreamkeepers, Utah Opera's celebration of the 1996 state centennial, a young Ute woman struggles to reconcile her heritage with life in modern American society. To save the Anglo man ; she loves, she must confront an enemy who per- ; sonifies her own self-doubt and the institutions which have oppressed the American Indian peo- ; pie. The traditional wisdom of her ; grandmother helps her overcome ' these challenges, and realize a new vision of a harmonious and richly diverse society. An original work by ' nationally-renowned composer David '. Carlson with libretto by Utah playwright play-wright Aden Ross, Dreamkeepers opens Utah's second century in the spirit of hope and accord. The world ; premiere production takes place from ' Jan. 13-21, 1996. , ; Rossini's music sets a viva- ; cious tempo as the indomitable Figaro helps an amorous count win his true love in The Barber of Seville. Decorating with 2(p6yn PILING UP CARPET INFORMATION Color may make the first impression, but it is a carpet's pile that leads consumers con-sumers to make decisions about appropriateness appro-priateness and durability. A carpef s pile is the yam on its top surface. Piles that feature loop construction have a continuous continu-ous uncut surface that is resistant to crushing and matting. Cut pile is composed com-posed of cut loops that leave the ends of the yarn exposed. Velvet plus, a member of this latter group, displays a rich, luxurious luxu-rious surface styled for elegant and formal for-mal rooms with little traffic Another cut pile, saxony, lends itself to rooms with a lesser degree of formality, while textured saxony is designed for informal rooms, Frieze is a good choice for any high-traffic area. Carpets which combine cut and loop piles are styled for all but the most formal settings. Whether to make a change based on pile, color, style, or durability, if you decide to replace carpeting in your home or office, beware of those "big discounts" you sometimes see advertised. All too often you get exactly what you pay "so little" for inferior grade materials and. workmanship. WALLS TO WINDOWS stands behind everything we do. We;'re not happy until you are. When you are looking to make some changes in your interiors, we welcome your call at 649-' 0403,' 1776 Park Avenue. rtTTTTTtttfTff I Hint: The more dense a carper's pile, the. more durable the carpet. To check, bend a section of carpet and see how much backing back-ing shows. The more backing that shows, the less dense the carpet. |
