In June 1902, the Daly-West Mine in Empire Canyon was producing more KlCHQS iO rdSS silver than either the Ontario or Silver King Mines. Seventy years later, when this photograph was taken, the crown jewel of John Daly's empire had fallen on hard times. Never a stranger to adversity, the Daly-West was the site of Park City's worst mining disaster when its underground dynamite magazine accidentally exploded on July 15, 1902. Twenty-five miners were killed by the explosion and resulting poison gas, while an additional nine miners at the Ontario were killed by gas which traveled through the interconnecting tunnels. A few years later the heavy flow of underground water stopped mining operations at the 1,200-foot level and below. When the Ontario drain tunnel No. 2 was extended to the Daly-West in 1908, rich silver deposits at the 1,200- and 1,700-foot levels were opened. In 1953, when United Park City Mines Co. was organized, the Daly-West provided the hoisting works for its new parent company. But the great mine's days were numbered. In 1974, a fire destroyed everything but the steel headframe. Today only the headframe and the 'feclohstructed hoist building remain Emerick, Drake to wed in iif I r l imjiiii .-A 1 Darren Drake, Alice Emerick and family Alice Emerick and Darren Drake announce their engagemen married on Aug. 26. 1995.
