An independent historian and writer from Salt Lake City, Bagley has authored numerous books detailing the lives of plain folk: traveling the pioneer trails. In 1846, Lansford Hastings persuaded 100 wagons to follow him through the Wasatch on an rpi) ' (STEAK THAT IS) I 10 oz. CHOICE N.Y. STEAK J Weather conditions pose fire threat The recent spelt of extremely hot weather and the tall vegetation growth from this spring has increased the potential for wildfires in the Summit County area. Summit District Fire Warden Lizzie Sharp would like to remind county residents and visitors the "closed fire season" is in effect from June 1 to Oct. 31. During the closed fire season, burning permits are required prior to the conduction of eligible open burning. Burning permits are available through the Summit District fire warden at 336-2221 336-2221 or 640-0800. The burning of trash or materials associated with yard clean-up activities is not permitted during the closed fire season. Sharp would also like to caution area residents that a large portion of the county is classified as UrbanWildland Interface. This is where structures and wildlands intermix. The chances for any fire in this area to cause significant damage exists. Some measures can be taken to reduce the risk posed by fire: 1. Remove all flammable vegetation away from structures or dwellings to approximately 30 feet Pruning of lower limbs on trees is helpful for defensible space. 2. Spark arresters on chimneys or stovepipes. The screen should be constructed of non-flammable material and have openings of not more than 12 inch and should be cleaned and maintained continuously. Remove the portions of any tree that extends within 10 feet of the outlet of any chimney or stovepipe. Clean roof surfaces and gutters regularly to avoid accumulation of flammable materials. 3. Propane tanks should be far enough away from buildings for valves to be shut off in case of fire. Clearance of flammable vegetation should be maintained for 10 feet around tanks.
