Show Thursday, August 10, 1995 D Page B8 The Park Record D Section B X-96 Bash Show brings by PETE VVEILAND Record guest writer Salt Lake City radio station X-96 provided it's listener appreciation concert, the Bash Show (or Big Ass Show, as it was also called) in our own backyard at Wolf Mountain, Thursday, Aug. 2. The show featured fea-tured 10 bands, all with varying alternative styles and attitudes. The show kicked off at about 1 p.m., and it appeared that the thunder clouds overhead might turn Wolf Mountain into a giant mud pit, which the crowds probably prob-ably wouldn't have minded too much, but would have put a Utah Navajo basket weaver honored with fellowship Utah Navajo basket weaver Mary Holiday Black has been selected as one of 12 recipients of the National Endowment for the Arts' 1995 National Heritage Fellowship awards. Much like the Japanese practice of designating artists "Living Treasures." this fellowship honors those committed to perpetuating our country's folk and traditional arts. Fellowship recipients are chosen from a nationwide nomination process and each fellow receives a $10,000 cash award. Black is the first Utahn and the first Navajo artist selected for this prestigious award. Black, a resident of Mexican Hat and a member of the Bitter Water clan, is being honored for her role in the revitalization of Navajo basket weaving. The daughter of a rug weaver and a medicine man, she learned to weave at age 11. By the 1960s, she was one of only a handful of active Navajo basketweavers. Her work has renewed interest in traditional tradition-al baskets for ritual and personal use and her design innovations have helped create a market for Navajo baskets with museums and among collectors. col-lectors. She has advanced the art through her "story baskets," inspired by Navajo beliefs, legends and everyday life, and by passing along basket weaving skills to her family and neighbors. Her efforts have resulted in a renaissance in Navajo basketry. Awards will be presented in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 29. For more information on Black or on Navajo basketry, contact Carol Edison, coordinator coor-dinator of the Utah Arts Council's Folk Arts Program, at 533-5760. I'm your neighborhood State Farm Agent. The British combo Wax laid down its flavor of mosh-enhanc-ing power punk pop and quickly drove the early arrivals to their feet. Salt Lake's very own Honest Engine carried on straight away. X-96 has been quite good to these local b?ys and have given their song, "Turn Out the Sun," a considerable amount of air play. Back stage there's talk of a record deal a-brewing a-brewing for these local lads. Good luck boys. L.A.'s new retro-cool hipsters, hip-sters, Gwen Mars, are a kick back to the glam days of old. And what X-96 X-96 event would be complete without Stretch Armstrong? Saxophones, trumpets, ska, ska, ska. These Provo-based boys always drive the pit into a frenzy. fren-zy. I saw three people carried off in stretchers and one heli-lifted to University Hospital. Utah kids are ska crazy, and Stretch Armstrong is one of the instigators instiga-tors of this kick-in-the-pants craze. The thunder heads from up above were still threatening with a chance of rain, but it was the barrage of water bottles that were being chucked like granades during Catherine Wheel's set that drenched the crowd. With so many power pop bands coming out of Britain, the crowd was refreshed by its precise pre-cise songcraft and well delivered vocals. ' The big surprise of the day was Howard Jones. Sporting a bright yellow wardrobe, long hair and a goatee, Jones performed per-formed with only an electric piano, an auxiliary percussionist and 8,000 fans. Jones stole the show, but before leaving, he promised a new album next year. Rounding out the evening was Bush. If you haven't heard Bush, you must not be listening to the radio.
