Show The Park Record D Section B Thursday, August 10, 1995 O Page B3 Two new high-tech movies show glimpse of eyil future by RICK BROUGH Record staff writer Virtuosity Virtuosity is set in the world of Virtual Reality which means that the movie is going to be very stupid and unreal. The film is briskly directed by Brett Leonard, but it centers on another Ebert-like cliche, The Fun-Loving Killer. He's SID 6.7, the bad guy in an experimental VR game that's being developed for police training. train-ing. This program too has glitches like the fact players can be killed by excessive neural stimulation. stimula-tion. With the aid of a friendly mad scientist, SID jumps out of the program into the real world. He's dressed in a blue suit that could have been stolen from Robert Palmer's closet; is programmed with the personalities of 1 83 serial killers; and can regenerate himself even if he's shot full of bullets. The only person who can stop him is Parker Barnes (Denzel Washington), an ex-cop who is Denzel Washington stars in Starstream... ARIES (March 21 April 19) All right! You're feeling pretty good about yourself, aren't you? Romance and creativity continue to come to you easily. On Thursday you're so sociable you could be out howling with delight at the Full Moon. Things get even better on Sunday and Monday when you're at the top of your lunar cycle. Your charm will get you anything you want Attractive strangers will allow you ' to cut to the front of the line, your mechanic will give you an extra week to pay for your custom hood ornament, and your Mom will admit you've always been her favorite. TAURUS (April 20 May 20) With your hedonistic ruler Venus in the lazy and lovable sign of Leo, you're in the mood to be pampered and spoiled Your motivation for working is limited to the praise and adoration you receive for your efforts. (If no one is going to notice how special and talented you are, why should you bother?) On Wednesday you're more inclined to get back down to business when the Moon enters your practical and methodical sign. Comforts don't always come cheap and you do LOVE your comforts. GEMINI (May 21 June 20) Here goes your split personality again. On one hand, you're the sweet talking fool for love ... and on the other hand, you're the critical cynic. "Love bah, humbug." It's never easy being the zodiac's zodi-ac's favorite schizophrenic. You've got an inner battle waging. You know what your everyday responsibilities are to yourself and your family, but you're also feeling the need to experience more freedom free-dom in your personal relationships. If your mate is an Aquarian, this shouldn't , ' be a problem. If your mate is a Scorpio, well that's a whole other, story., . CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Making money continues to be easy for you this week. However, with your lunar ruler in the divinely selfless sign of Pisces for the weekend, you may be inclined to give it away instead of receive it By Monday your drive to succeed suc-ceed kicks back into gear as you impa-tiemly impa-tiemly try to make up for lost time and , lost revenues. Naturally you change again on Wednesday when you're ready to slow down, relax, and enjoy interesting interest-ing conversations with your loyal friends. A mood swing a day keeps the :.t boredom away. , - LEO (July 23 August 22) You continue to dazzle one and all with ; vni.r rhnrm and fm flSf Nothing 1'ke 0 v. Needless to say, said maniac is one of the personalities encoded into SID. Also needless to say, Virtuosity is fast, violent and brainless. The only two saving graces are the stars. Denzel Washington tries to bring some quiet intensity to a part that could have been written for a straight-to-video thriller. (What was he thinking when he signed for this?) And Russell Crowe brings some campy glee to SID, an energetic ener-getic killer who still manages to suggest there's something stiff and synthetic about him. SID loves to victimize people where he can preen for the video cameras. In one of the movie's many stumbles in logic, he invades a talking-head show dealing with immigration policy where he should be able to get the attention of, oh, about 17 viewers. The other characters include the prissy mad scientist who sneers things like, "Who's been tamper- 4 the thriller, Virtuality. Week of Aug. 10-1 6 a little action from Venus (Pleasure Goddess of the Zodiac) to make your birthday month really memorable. Watch out for a financial misunderstanding misunderstand-ing or intellectual disagreement as the weekend starts. (Your mate doesn't understand how you spent $250 getting the dog groomed?) By Sunday all is forgotten for-gotten and forgiven when the Moon moves into the sign of "On To My Next Project" Aries and you decide that a little self grooming and pampering is in order. VIRGO (August 23 - Sept 22) The opposing Moon iu Pisces (the "what's reality got to do with it?" sign) on Friday and Saturday makes it difficult for you to think straight It's probably a good time to do those brainless tasks that won't bring any dire consequences if you screw them up. (Organize your sock drawer, put your CDs in alphabetical order, polish your shoes...) Although you believe your ideas are practical and decisive, you're really overestimating your mental (st)ability this week. Be careful. There's a deed out there to some swampland and they're trying to put your name on it. LIBRA (Sept 23 -Oct. 22) Get out your sneakers and your Softball mitt. On Thursday the Full Moon in Aquarius (sign of group activities) com-J1 bined with Combatant Mars in your sign encourages team competition and you're ready to lead the team to victory. If you're in a relationship, your mate may have an adverse reaction to your current state of rebelliousness on Sunday or Monday. Fortunately, your innate charm and fondness for peace will save you from doing anything totally unforgivable. unfor-givable. (But, maybe you should've dropped your sweetheart's flyball in that last game?) SCORPIO (Oct 23 Nov. 21) Now that your Intensely Profound ruler Pluto is moving forward again, you should be able to make it through the day without endlessly psycho-analyzing yourself. The weekend Moon in mystical mysti-cal musical Pisces makes it the perfect ume for you to enjoy yourself at an outdoor out-door festival of live music and clairvoyant clairvoy-ant readings'. (Of course, you'd rather be the Reader than the Readee.) Avoid discussing dis-cussing money with your friends for the remainder of the week. They're likely to have some big ideas on how they can spend YOUR money and you probably won't like that , ;. : .'-::;, -: SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec.21) Any attempts to experience, light-hearted freedom on Friday or Saturday may ing with my software?" Kelly Lynch plays a woman who is supposed to be a crack criminal psychologist. Although she's the mother of a little girl, she's dumb enough to forget the Law of the Vulnerable Tot. If the hero or heroine is chasing an escaped maniac, and they have an adorable little child, sooner or later that child will be abducted by the bad guy. Yet another cliche? Sooner or later, the Microchip Movies leave you with the feeling that they've been written off a computer disk. 12 The Net When a new tabloid newspaper appeared in the Park City area concerned solely with the subject of computers, I wasn't too surprised sur-prised to see it had a movie review section. Starting from early films like Tron and War Games, a whole sub-genre has developed dealing with computer hackers, videos and Virtual Reality (VR). Most of these Microchip Movies however, are mediocrities, where a decent story takes a back seat to whirling pixels and the dazzle daz-zle of special effects. The Net dashes through the standard twists and turns of the thriller plot, but it stands a bit above the average because it sticks with a contemporary background, and it's grounded in an effective performance by Sandra Bullock. Bullock's only been a star a few months, and she's already starting to rework her While You Were Sleeping persona an adorable winsome young woman who, for unfathomable reasons, lives a shut-in shut-in existence. In The Net, her lifestyle is not only sad it's foolhardy. Bullock plays Angela Bennett, who works from her Venice, Calif, home as a PC. mechanic, ferreting out glitches and viruses in computer comput-er programs. Virtually her whole existence is lived from the keyboard everything every-thing from ordering pizza to social chatter on the Internet until her insulated life is disrupted. She stumbles onto a disk that contains evidence of a vast conspiracy to infiltrate and control the core computer com-puter systems of the entire country. She's unaware of this however, as she packs up for a vacation in continued on B4 by Lynda Ray be weighed down by heavy emotional baggage. Life lightens up by Sunday evening when the Moon in Adventurous Aries puts you back in the mood to have - fun and take chances. The Creative Duo of the Sun and Venus in your solar house of travel continue to make any journeys that begin now a pleasurable learning experience. Pack your double sleeping bag along with your foreign language tapes, your world map, and your favorite straw hat. That should be enough to enjoy any trip that doesn't begin with a UFO abduction to a different solar system, sys-tem, CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 Jan. 19) The Moon in the emouonally volatile sign of Pisces on Friday and Saturday makes it difficult for you to remain professional pro-fessional and rational in your conversations. conversa-tions. This would not be the best time to invite your boss over for a barbecue or discuss politics with your new neighbors (the ones with the prominent rifle rack in the back of their pickup). Your ability to sense "when to say what" comes back to you for the remainder of the week. Okay. Now you can invite the boss, the neighbors and even the in-laws over for . an evening providing it's not the SAME evening. Nobody's that capable. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 . Feb. 18) The Full Moon in your eclectic, but friendly, sign on Thursday could cause you to turn up at the most unexpected places ready to party, party, party. The need to be unpredictable is stronger than ever during your lunar high and with a Full Moon in control, you'll be joined by the other friendly neighborhood lunatics in your quest for the eccentric and the bizarre. You are expected to give your relationship a little attention for the remainder of the week. Did you ever bother to tell your sweetheart that you two are in a relationship? PLSCES (Feb, 19 March 20) Thursday night's dreams may have a disturbing dis-turbing effect upon you. Be sure to have something really comforting available on Friday morning to compensate for your nightmares. (I suggest waffles with real maple syrup and the latest Dave Barry column.) Sunday and Monday are good for working and making money. You . aren't at your best with details though. You'll probably have to use some caution cau-tion and read the small print in any backroom back-room negouations. Still then, it takes a con artist to know one, doesn't it?
