Show y r r 'F v f r r f t f s f v r f The Park Record D Section A Thursday, January 1.9, 1 995 D Page A1 7 False claims by Committee To the Editor: If any of my facts are untrue, please do not print this letter. The facts: Last August, the SLC Olympic Bid Committee gave the false promise that dignitaries and athletes would get dedicated lanes on Utah's highways. The International Olympic Committee wrote that the Wasatch Front's "road network, with mostly six-lane highways allowing for dedicated Olympic accredited lanes, is impressive." Recently, Olympic bid booster Dave Johnson acknowledged that "we realize we can't close roads for the exclusive use of official Olympic vehicles." UDOT spokesman Kent Hansen stated that highway lanes in Utah cannot be exclusively dedicated for use by dignitaries and athletes. My opinions: Any small businessman making similar false claims would be subject to a civil lawsuit and criminal indictment for fraud. My recommendations: The International Olympic Committee, should terminate the SLC bid to show their intolerance for dishonesty. They should seek legal counsel about a civil suit The Utah Attorney General, should investigate. The citizens of Utah should ask if these liars can be trusted to tell the truth concerning Utah's financial liability. Utahns should vote on the question: "Shall the International Olympic games be banned from the State of Utah?" Thank you, KenLarsen Salt Lake County Vice-Chairman Libertarian Party A million thanks to the community To the Editor: I am so grateful to this community for their help and encouragement since my diagnosis of Ewing's Sarcoma. Thank you for all your gifts and prayers. During the past two months, many people have been active in organizing, fund-raisers to help pay my medical bills, There.arg,three. people I would like to personally thank. Debbie Reid and Kathie Marriott have spent many hours developing ideas, arranging fundraisers, fund-raisers, organizing the Egyptian Theatre night, emptying canisters and talking to community members and businesses. Another person who has made so much possible is Vickie Fbgarty. Vickie has been extremely instrumental in coordinating all aspects of fund-raisers. There were many days and nights when the volunteers at Wal-Mart consisted of Vickie and her family (Silvana, Rebecca and Elizabeth). Thank you for all your concern and dedication! Thanks! that I would like to thank is the Egyptian Theater. It was so kind of them to let all proceeds from the night of December IS go toward my medical fund. Thanks! Thirdly, -all the schools in Park City have been very supportive. Many of the schools are collecting "Nickels for Nivin" and sending cards to me while I am in the hospital. The high school has had a dance and a bake sale, sold football videos and encouraged gift-wrapping gift-wrapping volunteers. Thanks! Everyone's "hello's" and best wishes are also greatly appreciated! I can't name all the people who have been so kind. However, I know that many of my teachers, administrators, friends and acquaintances have contributed either money, time andor prayers to aid in my recover. Again, my most sincere appreciation to all of you! I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and God's Blessings in 1995! Nivin Lloyd Setting the record straight To the Editor I was misquoted in a Park Record article that ran Jan. 5 and just wanted to set the record straight. The article regarding the filming of the TV series "Extreme," on Main Street had me saying: "We just have to do it, there are more and more people who want to film on Main Street." My response to this is we don't have to do anything. Certainly many film crews are attracted to the charm of filming on historic Main Street but we don't have to work with them. We have chosen to work with film companies because of the - economic benefits to the community. The "Extreme" production is dropping over $600,000 into the local economy per episodeweek. Many businesses probably aren't even aware that many crew people are eating in their restaurants and shopping in their stores not to mention the money being spent on lodging, film developing, in hardware stores, plus in the hiring of local crew. The film company has gone the extra mile to do whatever possible to work with the city and film commission to ensure a good rapport with the community. The fact that they are giving Park City a screen credit is unheard of in the industry Posted January 19, 1995 but the return should be tremendous for the town. (Talk about a free Park City billboard!) Just to reiterate, the Park City Film Commission encourages any input from merchants and the community regarding the filming in town. Thanks to all the businesses for their continued cooperation! Nancy Volmer Park City Film Commission Make an informed voting decision TotheEditon Within a few short weeks the public is going to be asked to once more go to the polls and vote. This time not to put someone in office but rather they are being asked to think and vote on an issue that will cost them money. We, the people, are being asked to vote for our future, the future of the state, the future of the country in the form of our children's education. We are being asked to put more schools into the Snyderville Basin, the Park City School District, to make room for the population that is already here and that which we foresee will come in the near future. There is no question but that the schools that presently exist are ready to expand. The increase in the population predictably placed the present classrooms to the max. Unless we are willing to see the ' children In class sizes of forty and fifty there is no question but that there must be additional rooms. We are fixed with a double-edged sword. We at once want better and better schools and less and less students per room. The conclusion can be but one way, more rooms. The better the schools the greater the population will grow, parents want the best education for their children, ergo, more people will move to the community in search of the excellence that we profess to provide. I have been to school board meetings and meetings where the superintendent has placed a variety of plans to expand before the public. In all of the meetings I attended, compared to the population that will be affected, the attendance was slim. "I can only conclude that the major' part of the population that hopefully will be voting will be doing so without the adequate information at their finger tips. They will not know truly what and why they are voting as they will. I would hope that all who will be voting will call the school office for information they feel they need in order to give an informed vote. Personally I have weighed the various plans and I think the last plan is the best. I will vote for the bond issue not purely altruistically but with the investment in the future. This is one of those issues, however, where we feel we have to voice our opinion. We know there will be expressions of support and of opposition during the coming weeks leading to the School Bond decision. The opposition, if any, will probably be based on personal economics and stopping growth in our community. We hear a lot about Park City being a ski resort with the "greatest snow on earth." We are not just a ski resort, however. We are a wonderfully diversified, caring community. Snow is certainly a great asset but our real community asset is our young people. More important than fine tuning our snowmaking equipment is fine tuning the future opportunities for our children. Only through providing the finest educational system for them can we ensure the future of Park City and, ultimately, our nation. We all benefit We urge everyone to show their support for our children by voting YES on the forthcoming school bond issue. Diane and Roger Rinehart Support for the bond issue To the Editor On February 7th, we have the opportunity to either express our support or lack of support for continuing excellence in education in Park City. As the father of one child, a Junior in high school who will be out of the system before the benefits of the bond issue are realized, it would be easy to say Ann and I have already done our part and paid our fair share. On the contrary, we feel very fortunate to have had Katy enjoy the educational opportunities offered by the Park City School District since entering pre-school at the old Marsac Building 11 years ago. It would be extremely short-sighted and selfish on bur part to deny to the "children who follow Katy, the same opportunities she had. We all moved here because Park City was a special place. All of us helped in some manner to create an environment which has attracted other families to make Park City their home. The excellence of our school system has certainly been a contributing factor. Although Katy will be off to college in a little over a year, my support for the school system which has meant so much to her will continue. I am honored to be among the supporters of this very worthwhile bond issue. MacMacQuoid Two votes for the school board TotheEditon Use and I will vote "for" both the "issuance of bonds and the authorization for the annual special tax" at the Park City School District's special election on February 7th Even though our three children are grown and our two grandchildren are in Boston, we will vote "for" because the new middle school and high school facilities and the enhanced technology are absolutely necessary for the greater Park City Community that we love. As director of the University of Utah's Park City campus, I know the importance of a quality middle school and high school education as it relates to a successful university or college experience. Future quality of our local secondary school system is very dependent on your "for" vote on February 7th. All of Use's and my questions and concerns were answered in the extremely informative January 1995 issue of "Focus, The Park City School District Annual Report to Patrons." Use and I encourage you to study the issues and vote on February 7th. Fred and Ilse Hillyard Thanks from Park City Performances To The Editor Once again, we had a spectacular "Evening of Comedy with David Steinberg" at the Egyptian Theater on Saturday night, Jan. 14! And, once again, it was spectacular because many people gave of their time and talent to make it a rousing success. First and foremost Park City Performances and Save Our Stage Foundation would like to thank David Steinberg and Robert and Heather Urich for finding time in their incredibly busy schedules to appear on stage at the Egyptian, for the benefit of the theater. Their appreciation, of the historical and cultural value of our (and your) funk old theatre is to be admired, and we are deeply indebted to them. Many local people also helped with this event and deserve a hearty thank you: Sally Shannon, for organizing the event; Debbie and Ed Axtell and Cafe Terigo for the lovely, sinful, delicious dessert buffet; Hubie and Chris Rosch and the Copy Depot for printing our playbills and posters in record time and on very short notice; Conrad Elliott of Dering & Associates and Nancy Hull for designing the posters and invitations; Mary PARK CfTY COUNCIL MEETING SUMMIT COUNTY, UTAH JANUARY 26, 1995 PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the City Council of Park City, Utah wiB not hold its regularly schedule meeting on Thrusday, January 26, 1 995.
