Mike Leavitt and Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini have joined the Salt Lake Olympic Bid Committee to announce that Delta Air Lines has contributed an additional $500,000 in air travel to help bring the 2002 Winter Olympic Games to Salt Lake City. The announcement was made at a news conference at the State Capitol attended by the governor and mayor, Tom Welch, president of the Bid Committee and Fred H. Rollins III, Delta's District Sales Manager. Coupled with previous contributions, this announcement puts Delta's total participation in the Olympic bid effort at more than $1 million over the past four years. Welch expressed gratitude for the Delta contribution, noting that this gift significantly contributes to the needed travel expenses. "One of our main tasks is to bring members of the International Olympic Committee here to see how well prepared we are to host the games and how supportive the community is," Welch said. "That is very expensive. We can now continue, knowing that much of the travel expenses has been donated by Delta." i m i v r $19 a day 3 Mountains 7 Lifts 58 Runs THE SADDLE & SPUR Steak and BBQ Restaurant at ParkWest. "The bid process is very expensive, and there is no way it could be funded without major help from private sources," Leavitt said. "Delta is demonstrating it is at the forefront of that effort, in addition to the daily contribution it makes to our economic development through its hub operation at the airport.' Corradini noted that Delta's contribution to the bid effort goes beyond the generous contribution announced today. "Delta's international air service, coupled with its domestic hub operation at Salt Lake International Airport, helps make Salt Lake an attractive location for the winter Games," the mayor said. "Our theme for the Olympic bid is 'The World is Welcome Here.' Delta's presence and high level of service makes that theme believable by providing access to worldwide air travel to and from our city." Rollins said, "This is a team effort and Delta is pleased to do its pari as a corporate citizen in working to bring the Olympics to Salt Lake City and Utah. By hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City will be the focal point of world attention for many years to come and Delta is committed to that goal." Rollins noted also that some 4,800 Delta personnel are based in Utah. "That means that our interest in having the games come to Utah is not just a corporate concern, but also a personal matter for these Delta people who are proud to be a part of the local community."
