City Lights is the story of a tramp (Chaplin), a blind girl (Virginia Cherrill) and an eccentric millionaire (Harry Myers), unknown to one another in the beginning but woven together in the end. According to Chaplin's notes, the tramp is an idealist, yet often laughed at and ridiculed. He wanders the streets of the city aimlessly until he comes in contact with the blind girl. She is a flower vendor at one of the public squares. Because of her affliction, her feeling toward the tramp is purely spiritual. The kindness she shows him seems to fill a void in his life. The tramp, enraptured with the girl, seeks solitude at a river's edge, a place where he is able to dream. But his trend of thought is interrupted as a man is about to commit suicide. This is the millionaire, in one of his moods of eccentricity. His life is saved by the tramp and the two become bosom friends. As the weeks progress, a strong devotion develops between the blind girl and the tramp. Likewise, a friendship between the millionaire and the tramp progresses and digresses, according to the millionaire's mood. The blind girl becomes ill, making it impossible for her to work. Her grandmother attempts to shoulder the burden of their livelihood but with little success. The tramp seeks the millionaire for assistance only to discover that he has sailed for Europe. The tramp, realizing that money is imperative to help the girl, gets a job. He manages to hold the girl's little home together, though at MainStreet PizzaSNgddle 645-8878 530 Main Street mm Thursday February 10 Fat Paw Fri & Sat February 11 & 12 It's Been Said Wed & Thurs February 16 & 17 Gamma Rays Fri & Sat February 18 & 19 Chord On Blues .iC II J. He then loses his position. At last, the millionaire returns to the city. He greets the tramp with deep affection and takes him to his home. The tramp tells him of the girl and her afflictions. Money is quickly forthcoming to meet the bills accumulated by the girl and is even sufficient to assure an operation so that the girl may regain her sight. Before the money actually reaches the girl, thugs rob the millionaire. During the struggle and excitement, the tramp escapes from the house, carrying with him the money the millionaire gave him. But the millionaire is sobered by the blows of the thugs and fails to recognize the tramp. The tramp is sent to prison. When released, the tramp is once more ridiculed, laughed at and tormented has he trudges the streets. But fate steps in and brings him face to face with the girL He 7 stares at her in amazement, for in place of her humble flower stand is an elaborate floral establishment Embarrassed by his stare, the girl offers the tramp a flower and a coin. And as she grips his hand to place the coin in it, a strangeness overtakes her. Gradually there comes a realization that this is the man who was her benefactor. Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London on April 16, 1889. His father was a versatile vocalist and actor, his mother, an attractive actress and singer. Chaplin was on his own before the age of ten. The early death of his father and the subsequent illness of his mother made it necessary for him and his brother, Sydney, to fend for themselves. Having inherited natural talents from their parents, the brothers took to the stage as the best opportunity for a career. Chaplin made his professional debut as a member of a juvenile group called The Eight Lancashire Lads and rapidly won popular favor as an outstanding tap dancer. Soon after, Chaplin started a career in vaudeville and travelled to the United States in 1910. He scored an immediate hit with American audiences. In 1913, Chaplin's movie career began, when he joined Mack Sennett and the Keystone Film Company. After the completion of this contract, he joined the Essanay Company in 1915. Sydney Chaplin had then arrived from England and took his brother's place with Keystone as their leading comedian. Chaplin continued to move from movie company to movie company, producing and starring in many successful films along the way. In 1919, he joined with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith, to found the United Artists Corporation.
