TMMS students learn how to draw like Escher by SUSAN VITTITOW Record staff writer The Escher in Utah exhibit at the Utah Sate Fairpark in Salt Lake City has a variety of mind-bending mind-bending drawings and prints. Over 200 works of the Dutch artist M.C. Escher depict bizarre perspectives and transformations, intricate repeating patterns, and impossible architecture. The show also involves local school children. The exhibit included an "Escher-like drawing" contest for students. Andrea Hage's art students at Treasure Mountain Middle School participated. They submitted interlocking wine bottles and glasses, geometric patterns and pictures within pictures. Out of thousands of entries from various schools, TMMS sixth grader Jamie Harman was a winner in the grades 4-6 category. Her entry depicted a pattern of interlocking whales and fishes. She received an Escher gift shop voucher for an undisclosed amount. Her drawing will become part of the travelling exhibit, which is the largest collection of Escher on display. In addition, "Whales and fishes" will be published in a catalog with other children's winning entries. Hage says the students have enjoyed making the Escher-like drawings. "They love it," she says. "They love creating puzzles within puzzles." She has been impressed with the freshness and originality of the students' work. While she is pleased with Harman's prize, she believes the kids are all winners. Hage says she learned methods of teaching children to make the drawings from Escher collector and graph theorist Frank Harary. She also attended a workshop at the exhibit in Salt Lake. There are several methods that can be used to create an Escher-like Escher-like drawing. Some students worked off of grid paper, designing patterns based on equilateral triangles, squares or - . . - . -o te l. i V " 3 Jamie Harman hexagons. Others used graph paper. Harman used the method of creating a pattern and repeating it. Symmetry is also a recurring theme in the works of Escher, Hage says. Students worked with fold, or mirror-image symmetry for some drawings. Others treated their patterns as if they were on transparencies and could be flipped in any direction. Hage also taught them to use glide symmetry, such as you see in a plaid or a quilt, and the radial order found in snowflakes and kaleidoscopes. The Children's Museum of Utah has asked to display many of the TMMS students' works, now that judging at the Escher exhibit is over. Hage will also be putting up a display of the drawings at the middle school starting sometime the week of Jan. 10. A preliminary sketch of Jamie Harman's "Whales and fishes." Her winning entry will join the traveling M.C. Escher exhibit. What's for lunch this week?
