Gary Hennings came back in late June, after a four-year stint in Santa Monica, Calif, building speculative homes. Prior to that, he lived and worked in Park City for seven years. He has been in business for 18 years. In California, Hennings worked with partner Richard Bartoccini and both their wives to design and refurbish homes. The four combined their skills to create new exteriors that blended in with old neighborhoods, and interiors with all the conveniences they would want in a house. Hennings said they enjoyed a great deal of success "there: none of the houses they worked on lasted more than a month on the market. According to him, their work there attracted a following, making the houses even easier to sell. Hennings says it was a good experience. But despite the opportunities elsewhere, he wanted to return to Park City and the mountains. He says he has lived in the mountains for most of his adult life and enjoys the atmosphere. He claims he had "zero ski days" last winter, which was a distinct disadvantage to life in the city. His son and daughter, however, were the biggest factor in the decision to move. "I wanted to bring my kids back here and raise them," he explains. He kept their house in Park City when they moved to California, so it was relatively easy to move back. Bartoccini took an opportunity in Boise, despite efforts to bring him here. Coming back to Park City m J. J . '"". li - ''' . I r. , f ? He missed the beginning of construction season and is contending with a lack of available labor. However, Hennings hopes to fill a niche created by other contractors being booked up for the year. Hennings says he tries to offer honesty and quality custom work. He wants to do residential construction and remodeling in this area. His preference is to provide work that will bring him repeat customers and referral business. Although bids are out, he has not done any jobs here this summer.- With all the other builders, "It's tough to let a new guy in." He is relying on friends to help him out and is trying to target new lot purchasers. He says there are some job possibilities in the spring. "I just need to get my name out there, " he says. "I think once that takes place, my work will speak for itself." Diane and Philo Smith, owners of the Sorrento Grille in Laguna Beach, Calif., have announced the September opening of The Grille at the Depot, a new restaurant in Park City which will showcase the culinary talents of Rosanne Ruiz as executive chef. Located at 660 Main St, the restaurant will feature contemporary California cuisine. Marci Bame, previously of the Robert Mondavi Wine and Food Center, will serve as sous chef. Ruh, a self-taught chef who created and prepared a special American menu to honor Julia Child on her 80th birthday last fall, was recently singled out by Los Angeles Times food critic Ruth Reichl as one of Southern California's top 40 chefs. She first gained notoriety with her distinctive style of fresh California cuisine with a Mediterranean influence when she opened Sorrento Grille in 1988. In 1990, she began working for the Robert Mondavi Wine and Food Center in Costa Mesa where she was responsible for the center's overall kitchen management, cooking classes, recipe development, wine and food pairing, menu planning and preparation for numerous special events. She returned to the Sorrento Grille earlier this year as executive chef and consultant to train the new j! But we are being delightfully accurate. You can live in a mountain setting with world class recreational facilities just moments away, yet be in a neighborhood so convenient to the cultural arts or restaurants of the city that the commute is shorter than a cross-town drive. Living at Eagle Ridge, you can arrive home from work and still have time to take in nine holes without hurrying. Or you can leave the smog-bound inversion of the valley each day for the crisp blue sky of winter sunshine. Your friends might not believe it, but you can leave your driveway and be on the ski lift in less time than it takes most people to load their equipment into the car. Your children can attend school in the system rated one of the best in Utah. And you can enjoy the security of a planned development, yet literally hike or bike on a summer outing from your own yard. Eagle Ridge at Pinebrook also features innovative home designs that take advantage of the pure light and air of the mountain setting.
