Show T T The Park Record D Section B Thursday, August 19, 1993 0 Page B9 Folk arts featured at Liberty Park concert a a a Summer Menu at The Folk Arts Program of the Utah Arts Council continues its 1993 "Mondays in the Park" concert season with a performance Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at Liberty Park's Chase Home Museum. The concert opens with African-American African-American hymns and chants performed by the Rev. France Davis, pastor, and the Rev. James Gates, of the Calvary Baptist Church. They will perform one of the oldest forms of African-influenced African-influenced music that is still suing in America. Metered hymns and chants have no musical notation; the style of singing is passed orally from generation to generation. This style of music is rarely heard in Utah, but Davis and Gates sang this style of music regularly at church services in their native South. With Arts Council funding through the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Project, Gates worked with Davis and, together, they have perpetuated this tradition in their Calvary Baptist Church congregation in Salt Lake City. . At 7:30 p.m., Keola Ohumukini and Noelani Parson Tobler will present the ancient style of Hawaiian hula. Although modem styles of hula, influenced by Western fashions and music, are popular entertainment in dinner clubs and social gatherings, the ancient form of hula, performed only to the accompaniment of drumming and chanting, is seldom seen outside the islands. Ohumukini has worked with Tobler for more than a decade, instructing her in the spirituality and heritage expressed through the art form of ancient hula. With Apprenticeship Project funding, Tobler intensified her studies and graduated to become an assistant instructor herself. The summer concert series closes with a performance by the Arrambide family, formerly of the Andes mountains of Peru. Andean music is noted for its soulful melodies and intricate rhythms, which are living representations of the region's Incan heritage. Descended from Quechua-speaking Indians, the Arrambide family presents Native American melodies and philosophies in both Spanish and Quechua. For their efforts in preserving their cultural heritage, Santos and Luzmila Arrambide recently received the "El Condor Pasa EL CHEEiO Southwestern Grill 649-0883 255 Main St. bun a a a a NtW SALAUa EL CHEEiO Southwestern Grill 649-0883 255 Main St. ATTENTION Award" from the Club Peru of Utah. With funding from the Folk Arts Annmntirashin Protect, thev are perpetuating yet another -Native 595 American culture in Utah. All featured performers are participants in the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Project, which encourages the perpetuation of traditional arts by funding teaching projects with master artists. The concert is presented on the porch of the historic Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Art in the center of Liberty Park. The audience is invited to bring folding chairs, blankets and a picnic dinner, and to tour the museum's exhibit, "Shared legacies," after the concert Both are free.
