Show Autumn Aloft 1991 Page 6 THE GAMES PILOTS PLAY K; ft rVi v' I The objective of Autumn Aloft is to provide a unique, fun, visual adventure for all. However, there is an element of competition for the pilots. The term "balloon race" is sometimes used to describe the events, but that term is really a misnomer. Speed has nothing to do with the outcome of our contests. Instead, the winners in our games are determined by the skill and ability of the pilot to accurately use the available breezes to direct the balloon to the target area. Our pilots participate in three different games over the weekend. In the "hare and hounds" competition, the hare balloon takes off approximately 10 minutes before the rest of the balloonists. The hare balloon flys to a clear area, and lays a large X on the ground as a target. The other balloons attempt to fly to the target area and drop a marker on the X. The closest drop to the marker is the winner. "Water Ball" will test marksmanship over water. Three different ponds around the Park Meadows Golf Club will have innertubes floating as targets for rubber balls. The "Balloon Joust" returns to Autumn Aloft this year. Tethered weather balloons are placed at various locations. Each one that is burst by the pilot with the official jousting stick earns points. In addition, a mystery target will be placed on the field with a scoring area for points depending on accuracy.
