Director Sue Boyle led the vocal charge through both traditional and contemporary music. Hound-ful holiday turns into handful Continued fromAI 3 Airedale Terrier, Mr. Fernortner, let out his shrill whimpers of sorrow. Mr. Fernortner has been in a lot of trouble lately. Porcupine quills four times in six weeks drained my dad's wallet, that, on top of taking the turkey at Thanksgiving and eating three pairs of leather shoes had given him one more chance before he went to the pound, so said my parents. Now Mr. Fernortner is not a bad dog but he's not good either. He jumps up on people with muddy feet and barks endlessly. But he has his good days. We had now been to the "Nutcracker" "Nut-cracker" seven times and I had everything memorized. My favorite part of it was coming home to a nice clean, warm house and going to sleep. On this particular night the above was not the case. As our family fami-ly gingerly stepped upstairs to go to bed we were met with a complete uproar. The most spectacular tree ever had been pulled over with glass ornaments shattered all around us and beside it all eating a string of popcorn and cranberries was Mr. Fernortner. Well this was his last chance and he had goofed up big this time. My mother dictated very slowly, slow-ly, "Andrea' take the dog outside on the deck, Heidi put Nik to bed, then you both come back and help me clean up this mess." She saidit slowly slow-ly and calmly .without showing any emotion at all. My father just stood there staring into space. No one moved for about two minutes just watching the dog and mourning over our gorgeous tree. We all quietly and quickly went about our business, a hazy feeling over us all. The entire time my dad just stood there watching. wat-ching. A halfway kind-of watching. Not really seeinZ but looking at everything. His eyes were wide open staring. We didn't clean it all up, just enough to walk around. I thought deeply about my dad while I was hauling that Christmas tree out to the curb. My dad was great, always teasing and tickling me. He wasn't what I thought of as cute, with a square head and long nose. But he was "handsome" my My brother and sister had already recovered the loss. But as I walked walk-ed around the house his food bowls, dog food and bones looked at me calling for their long lost friends. mom kept telling me. "Well that's what you think." I sass back. My dad was really smart too. Degrees here degrees there, you wouldn't believe how many he had. He had never gotten mad at me, except for once when he and my mother were having a fight and I was little and scared because I thought this meant they were getting a divorce and stuff so I went into their room and tried to stop them. He didn't like that at all and yelled at me. That made me cry so hard I have never been in trouble with him again. Lying in bed I thought about what he was going to do about the dog. The next morning I was about to find out... "He's going," my dad decreed. "No, oh daddy pleeease, no, nol came screams from my siblings as they ran to their rooms to cry. I sat there for a moment not saying a word then took my dishes to the sink. I could tell my mom did not want him to go either. She just went upstairs to take a nap, even though she had gotten up only an hour ago. "He has to, Andrea," my father tried to comfort me, or maybe trying to convince himself "It's better this way." there was perhaps a hint of sadness in his voice. "I know." was all I could manage to let escape before I broke out into tears. My dad hugged me and asked me to come with him. When I said no he went to put Mr. Fernortner in the car. I watched him drive down the road, slowly but steadily and still going. go-ing. My brother and sister had already recovered the loss. But as I walked around the house his food bowls, dog food and bones looked at me calling for their long lost friend. I wondered how someone who I thought was so wonderful could hurt me to such a great extent. " That Christmas went on to bring a new tree, presents and many other things, all but a dog. On the day after we proceeded to clean up the messes and holiday decorations. My dad didn't come home from work that night because the last few days he had been getting the silent treatment treat-ment from everyone even Mom. But the next day when I came home from my grandma's house Fernortner Fernort-ner jumped up and got mud all over me. I had never been so glad to be dirty.
