The Brighton Ski Area, where workers have been making snow since Oct. 30 became the first Utah ski area to open this year when they opened three runs and one chairlift last Saturday. "We always aim to be the first area to open," said Brighton General Manager Randy Doyle. Doyle added that Brighton's small work force makes the early opening easy. Brighton opened the Majestic lift and three trails (Majestic, Upper Mary and Midnight) covered with twenty-four inches of man-made snow. A few other trails, not covered by man-made snow, are open, but conditions on those trails are described as "marginal." Snow boarders will not be allowed on the mountain until more trails have been opened. "It's not that we don't like snowboarders," Doyle said. "There's just not enough room." The Mary Chair will open next at Brighton, serving the Great Western and the Snake Creek runs. Night skiing ski-ing resumes in mid-December. Lift tickets are $18 for adults, and $13 for children. Half -day passes are available for $14. Busy sports schedule on tap for Park City's disabled The Park City Handicapped Sports Association plans to keep handicapped athletes and non-handicapped non-handicapped volunteers busy all winter. "We're really looking at being be-ing able to improve our service and not be quite so maxed out this year," says Meeche White, Executive Director of the PCHSA. The PCHSA will offer a unified sports basketball league for eight weeks beginning Dec. 1. Unified sports basketball is "a new concept," according to White. "It's to further our philosophy of mains treaming disabled disabl-ed individuals with non-disabled individuals, in-dividuals, creating a more natural environment." Players are needed for the league, which is tentatively scheduled for Fridays at 5 p.m. at the Treasure Mountain Middle School. The coach of the PCHSA basketball basket-ball team is "Sweet" Lou Hudsen, former star of the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. "We certainly have the best qualified coach in all of the state," White said. The Park City team finished second last year in the Utah Special Olympics. In January and February the PCHSA will offer a bowling league at Z-Place for both physically and mentally disabled athletes. The bowling coach, Susan Atensio, attended at-tended a special training program last year for instructing handicapped handicap-ped bowlers. The PCHSA also offers ski lessons for physically and mentally disabled individuals of all ages and abilities. The types of skiing offered are: Three-track one ski and outriggers outrig-gers (ski poles with small skis at the bottom) for amputees or those who have one leg impaired. Four-track two skis and outriggers outrig-gers for double amputees, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, partially paralyzed and others. Two-track two skis and standard poles for developmental disabled, BK amputees and others. Sit-ski for paraplegics and quadriplegics. , Mono-ski for paraplegics. The ski program runs Jan. 3 - Feb. 12, and March 3 - 28. Classes meet Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 9 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Ten dollars per week covers one two-hour lesson, a lift pass and equipment. Since space is limited, the PCHSA encourage? participants to sign up now. The bowling program costs $10 for the full six weeks, and $10 also covers eight weeks of basketball. Scholarships are available to those unable to pay for any PCHSA activities. ac-tivities. For more information on PCHSA activities or to find out how you can help, call Meeche White at 649-3991.
