Show I 111' Park Record Thursday, November 9, 1989 Page A17 Ski Swap is successful Editor: Just a brief thanks to all of you who came to the 17th annual Park City Ski Swap! In all ways it was a huge success. Thanks for being patient pa-tient with the crowd on Saturday morning and thanks for supporting the Park City Ski Team. We hope all of you were able to fine what you were looking for at the swap, and that all of you are now ready for the ski season that's here. The annual ski swap can not be what it is without all of the volunteers who dedicated their precious time to support the PCST junior skiers. All the volunteers need to know how much we thank you for your efforts ef-forts in making this swap the biggest and best ever. We met our goal on this one; now it's time to cheer for the young athletes as they meet theirs. Thanks Park City! Fred Turton Park City Ski Team Gold medal to Red Ribbon supporters Editor: On behalf of the Summit County Prevention Center, we would like to thank individuals who helped to make Red Ribbon Week a success. We would like to thank the Parley's Park Elementary School Principal (Linda Singer) and teachers for implementing the Red Ribbon Campaign within the classroom. A thank you to the elementary P.T.A. volunteers who helped promote pro-mote Red Ribbon Week throughout the week and weekend. To Mike Massimino and Albertsons for donating 600 grocery bags and allowing allow-ing the Prevention Center and the elementary P.T.A. to display our campaign at their store this past Saturday. Also to KPCW for promoting our campaign and to all the volunteers for helping to make this a community communi-ty effort. It is great to see local people joining join-ing together in the fight against drug abuse. We would like to reinforce the message that we all can choose to live healthy lifestyles and work together to ensure a better Park City for all. Sincerely, Diane Cashel Dog dilemma Editor: . Alex Wells' cutesy little article on dogs running around free just may have caused more harm than good. As an eight-year resident of Park City, Ci-ty, I have seen more than my share of injured and killed dogs. Park Avenue sees a large number of dogs hit by automobiles, who, more often than not, fail to even stop afterwards; leaving the Park Avenue residents to tend to the dog. The owner. In one way, you are right, Alex. Dogs can't commit criminal acts. But their owners can. And so it seems in Park City, they frequently do. It seems like there is a black lab for every dumpster in Park City. I've frequently asked Animal Control Con-trol of Summit County to come around the neighborhood, but you don't see them around very often. I've asked the local magistrate about a policy where, in order for a dog owner to reclaim their animal, the owner would have to perform a community sevice (such as cleaning up garbage strewn by strays), but I was informed that local residents would never stand for such a policy. I guess the policy of letting your dog run around free will stand. The point of all this is you wouldn't allow a three-year-old child to run around your neighborhood, why your dog? JanSanford Heartfelt thanks to Boy Scouts Boy Scout Troup 72: Many heartfelt thanks for finding and returning my checkbook.. I could have had a lot of hassels had you not been so wonderful ! Again, thanks! Marsha Wellever Dogs mangle children Editor: It amazes me to find that someone (Alex Wells "No Leashes in Heaven") can be so naive to think that the only consequences of running runn-ing dogs is garbage on the lawn and doo doo on your shoes. Before coming to Park City, my job was photographer for a plastic surgeon, to document "before" and "after" of his work. Picture this, Alex; victims of dog bites, most often children, with entire ears, cheeks and even noses, missing. Or, with puncture wounds and ripped rip-ped flesh on all parts of their bodies. Or maybe you can identify with the meter reader who almost lost the family jewels while making his rounds? All of this damage was not done by pit bulls but by harmless family pets who become frightened after wandering away from their familiar neighborhoods, or, like humans, often become bolder than usual when traveling in a pack. Fixing up these people takes many surgeries often costing several hundred hun-dred thousand dollars. If nothing else, leash your dog simply so that you won't be libel for the financial damages. It's not fair for my neighbors' kenneled ken-neled dogs to be continually harrass-ed harrass-ed by cruising dogs. I have better things to do on Thursday than pick up garbage strewn by a passing dog. But, most of all, why should I have to chase loose dogs from my fenced yard where my children are "safely" "safe-ly" playing? Candace Coyle Proud of Parley's Halloween Carnnival Editor: Vampires, ghosts, princeses, devils, ninja turtles, cheerleaders, witches, and many more were out in full force on Halloween night. And what a special night it was at the Parley's Park Halloween Carnival held at Treasure Mountain Middle School! We are proud of the Halloween Carnival and feel it provides a warm and safe place for our children to enjoy en-joy the evening with each other. We know that this wonderful evening could never take place without the support of the many Park City businesses who donate the food and prizes and the parents and teachers who donate their time. We truly appreciate ap-preciate you all! Thank you to Brian Schiller who, as always, was accommodating in every way and to Linda Singer for her help and support.
