Show Page C2 Thursday, March 3, 1988 Park Record Savory slow-pace flick definitely laughable by RANDY HANSKAT Record staff writer When you think of John Hughes, you think of adolescence. You think of trying to find your self confidence, of trying to find that first sexual experience. ex-perience. You think of films like Ferris Fer-ris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty Pret-ty In Pink, and a few others. All were enjoyable movies, some more than others. And all dealt with teenagers, leading many movie goers to wonder if Hughes was still trying to relive his youth. Then along comes She's Having a Baby, the newest Hughes movie, and without knowing anything about the film you expect Something about teenage pregnancy or something along those lines. If it's Hughes it's got to be teen, right? Wrong. With She's Having a Baby Hughes breaks away from the teens and into young adulthood. And he does it in a very funny, likeable way. She's Having a Baby is a film which has a slow pace, a pace some may get impatient with, but it is a film which leaves you feeling good. Isn't that the whole idea behind a trip to the movies? The film follows the trials and tribulations of Jefferson Briggs (Kevin Bacon) and his wife Christie (Elizabeth McGovern) as they try to negotiate the complicated path, of young adult life. The movie opens with, the soon-to-be marriage of Jefferson Jef-ferson and Christie, complete with doubting in-laws 'on both sides, a best friend who wants Jefferson to pull out at the last minute, and a priest who gives a more discriptive set of vows (which only Jefferson can hear) detailing all the cliched horrors of marriage. Starting with the marriage, the couple run into most of the dilemmas dilem-mas of young life. Christie wants Jefferson to get his masters degree immediately upon marriage, but Jefferson soon decides that he is learning less in grad school than he did in high school and goes in search of a job. Lying his way through a complete resume, his untruths show his desire to work and he gets a copywriting job in an ad agency in Chicago. From there, the Briggs flow into the mainstream path. They buy a house, argue about furniture, deal with block parties filled with blockheads, wonder about how careers should go, are bickered at about not yet having children by the in-laws, and then decide to have a child. Through all this runs a self-deprecating, self-deprecating, sarcastic first person narrative by Jefferson. It is on his character that the film is centered, So the narrative is a perfect vehicle to allow certain scenes to be set up pgoperly to get the best laugh. Basically, ,the film is about growling grow-ling up, mostly male growing up. Christie, it seems, knows pretty much what she wants in life, just like mdst women do. :: Jefferson, on the other hand, is the epitomy of the Peter Pan Complex. "Never want to grow up, never want to grow, not me." At one point, after the couple has had a spat about furniture fur-niture apd family, Jefferson's narrative nar-rative brings up Peter Pan. He says he thought he was the true Peter Pan, never having to face responsibility, respon-sibility, but is slowly realizing that he is growing up, and fast. But he always doubts. He doesn't know what he wants from life, and the film lets you discover with him just what the deal is. Not until the final pregnancy scenes does he finally final-ly come to understand and be comfortable com-fortable with his life and himself . But don't think this is a preachy, mushy movie. The subject matter of never wanting to grow up and face the music is one which all guys, anil girls who have put up with their im-. maturity, can relate to. And beyond that, Hughes' deft comedic touch makes it easy to take. At times throughout the film, a scene will play out and you think it is the actual true life of the couple, but t then you will-be laughingly surpris-ed surpris-ed to find it is just a dream of Jefferson's. Jeffer-son's. The trick allows some absurd, campy humor into the film at just the right times. She's Having a Baby is an entertaining enter-taining film, especially for couples. The man is a fountain, and films he has done in the past have plugged that fountain. ' While some of his past movies have been good, none have allowed him to flow like Good Morning Vietnam. Viet-nam. ; The film is based on Adrian Cronauer, a disc jockey for the military controlled radio in Vietnam. Viet-nam. While Cronauer wasn't a comic com-ic genius like Williams, he is said to have loosened up the military play listabit. Williams has been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance. Moonstruck, Cher's new movie which was featured at the United States Film Festival, is a sophisticated comedy about a relationship rela-tionship which is spawned under lunar influence. There is hardly a culture which doesn't hold the moon responsible for lots of mystic coincidence. The very root of lunacy is the moon. With this in mind, the producers of -Moonstruck have created a romance based on chemistry with the moon as catalyst. Of course, the moon comes out on a regular basis, but this is a special moon. It is one of those moons that fills the sky and pulls on everyone's emotional tide. The special moon comes out at an inconvenient time here, with amusing amus-ing consequences.
