Show Ill V t ' ' ' t ' . Locals nail Super G races on home turf A by RANDY HANSKAT Record staff writer The scene could have been one from a new soap opera, The Young and the Fearless. Or maybe The Young and the Reckless. Whatever your title, the action on PayDay run at the Park City Ski Area this past Saturday and Sunday was fast and furious, as six Super G races were run. A total of 153 racers competed in the two days of racing, all with the goal of qualifying for the Junior II and III Olympics, coming up in March. This weekend's races were the sixth and final Junior Olympic qualifying quali-fying events. Racers, depending on age, were attempting to earn enough points to qualify for either the Junior II Olympics (ages 14 and 15) or the Junior III Olympics (ages 12 and 13). Many local kids did just that, either consolidating their positions or making it in only thanks to good weekend performances. Following the final race, the Junior Olympic teams were named, and 16 Park City kids were on the list (see boxed story). In addition to the JIIs and Ills, a smattering of JI (ages 16-18) and JIV (ages 10 and 11) racers also competed on PayDay. The JIs were in attendance mainly as rabbits, meaning their presence added prestige to the races, thereby lowering lower-ing the penalty points for the races. In ski racing the better you race, the lower your penalty points. And, the higher the quality of the field, the lower the points for the race. The JIVs were on PayDay for the experience. Two Park City Ski Team JIVs, Christin Circo and Beth Sarazine, did well enough, however, to have made the JO team if they rvri ttv' .rW' !''(, " t. Since the race wasn't for JIVs, the younger skiers had to place in the JIII bracket. That fact didn't bother Circo, Cir-co, however, as she had a third and a fourth against the older kids. i had been older. Since there are many names, spread over three races for each sex, only the top two results from racers finishing in the top-15 will be covered here. JI Cammy Potter of the PCST led the older ladies with a first and a second se-cond as her top results. Amy Day (PCST) had a second and a third. Essie Doilney (PCST) had a ninth. Ali Salomon was the most consistent consis-tent JII. The PCST racer nabbed two thirds in the JII class. Carrie Miller (JII PCST) had a fifth and a sixth in the lis. Bristol Sorensen of the ParkWest Ski Team had a fourth and a seventh as her top results. Sheryl Sarazine was the top JIH over the weekend. The PCST member was second in the Jills one race, third another. Rachel Salomon (PCST) had a second and a fourth. Sandi Ferre (PCST) had a fifth and a sixth, while Brooke Coleman (PCST) had an eighth and a ninth. Amberly Sherman (PCST) was ninth and 11th, Jessica Thompson (PCST) 11th and 12th. Teveka Sorensen of ParkWest was 12th and 13th. Kayleen Baltz (PCST) was the last local to put together two top-15 results, a 14th and a 15th. Christin Circo (PCST) was the monster of the JIVs. Since the race wasn't for JIVs, the younger skiers had to place in the JIII bracket. That fact didn't bother Circo, however, as she had a third and a fourth against the older kids. JIV Beth Sarazine (PCST) had a 13th, Katie Wasilewski (PCST) a 12th. Fred Turton of the Park City Ski Team said this was Wasilewski's first Junior Olympic qualifying race experience, and her performance was impressive. "She is really showing show-ing herself to be an up-and-comer," Turton said. t -1 m 1 i - Jere Calmes grits his teeth as Jacob Doilney was in top form on the guy's side, the PCST JI performed perform-ed his rabbit functions well, winning both races. Teammate Jeff Dodd won the other race and finished second se-cond in another. Jere Calmes and Bret Johnson (PCST JIs) split the three third place results, while Johnson added a fourth. C.J. Baltz (PCST) was the top JII, grabbing a third and a sixth over the weekend. Two ParkWest racers were next in line. Lars Nesseth had a fourth and an eighth, while Jason -Parkin had an eighth and a ninth. Carter Gregory (PCST) had a 10th and an 11th to round out the top-15 results. The JIII racers had a local twosome on top. Ehlias Louis (PCST) nailed two first place results in the JIII bracket. Olin Glenne (PCST) won the third race and was ! second in another. Brian Nelson (PCST) had a ninth and a 10th, while Mike Carlin had two lOths. Carlin is returning from an injury suffered early in the season, and the Super G races were his first competition since the injury. Two lOths were good results for those circumstances. cir-cumstances. Tav Streit turned in the other JIII top-15 results, with two 12th place finishes. So, once again, the local racers shown on the home hill. Now, for those who qualified, it will be on to either California or Idaho. The JII Olympics will run from March 14 through 20 at Mammoth Mountain, Ca. The JIII Olympics will run from March 15 through 20 at Schweitzer, Idaho.
